He had worked as a teacher, journalist and printer. He gained renown through his poems, <i>Leaves of Grass,<\/i> 1855\u201392. During the Civil War, he nursed wounded soldiers, eventually becoming ill himself. His free-verse poems expressed a democratic idealism, as seen in his <i>Democratic Vistas,<\/i> 1871. His other works include: <i>Drum Taps, <\/i>1865, and <i>Specimen Days,<\/i> 1882\u201383.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>In \u201cStarting from Paumanok,\u201d from his <i>Leaves of Grass,<\/i> Walt Whitman wrote:<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'>I say the whole earth and all the stars in the sky are for religion\u2019s sake. \u2026 <\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'>I say that the real and permanent grandeur of these States must be their religion.&#65279;2530&#65279;<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Walt Whitman expressed:<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'>To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle.
