A distant relative of Ralph Waldo Emerson, he became well-known as a magazine writer. He was the editor of the <i>New York Independent,<\/i> editor of the <i>Oxford Book of American Verse,<\/i> 1927; and contributed verse to the <i>Harvard Monthly.<\/i> His first volume, <i>Low Tide on Grand Pre, <\/i>published in 1893, followed by the books of verse: <i>Songs of Vagabondia,<\/i> 1894\u20136, 1901; <i>A Winter Holiday<\/i>; <i>Pipes of Pan<\/i>; and <i>Ballads of Lost Haven.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:9.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>In his work, <i>Vestigia,<\/i> William Bliss Carman wrote:<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0cm;margin-right:0cm;margin-bottom:0cm; margin-left:18.0pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height:normal'>I took a day to search for God,<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0cm;margin-right:0cm;margin-bottom:0cm; margin-left:18.0pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height:normal'>And found Him not.
