(July 21, 1899\u2013July 2, 1961), was an American author who exerted a profound influence on American writers. He served in an American volunteer ambulance unit in France and Italy during World War I. Following the war he was the European correspondent for the Torono Star<\/i>, and later the Paris correspondent for the Syndicated News Service. He reported on the Spanish Civil War, 1937\u20131938, and during World War II was a war correspondent on the Western Front, 1944\u20131945. His works include: Three Stories and Ten Poems<\/i> (1923); In Our Time<\/i> (1924); The Sun Also Rises<\/i> (1926); The Torrents of Spring<\/i> (1926); Men Without Women<\/i> (1927); A Farewell to Arms<\/i> (1929); Winner Takes Nothing<\/i> (1933); Death in the Afternoon<\/i> (1933); Greenhills of Africa<\/i> (1935); 2 (1938); For Whom the Bell Tolls<\/i> (1940); and Across the River and into the Trees<\/i> (1950).<\/p>\n
When asked his opinion of the Nobel Prize for literature, as recorded in McCall\u2019s Magazine,<\/i> May 1956, Ernest Hemingway stated:<\/p>\n
