THE PERIL OF MERE SUPPOSITION."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE PERIL OF MERE SUPPOSITION.<\/p>\n<p>Act_27:13.<\/p>\n<p>Introduction.<\/p>\n<p>Supposing. This is a word common enough in everyday language. &quot;Well, now, let us suppose, for the sake of argument,&quot; we say.<\/p>\n<p>Legitimately Necessary. It may be legitimately necessary in some branches of philosophy and science. An example: In one of the latest books on the existence of God, the hypothetical argument is proclaimed as the only satisfactory proof. Supposing there is a God, we find that works.<\/p>\n<p>Dangerous. In matters concerning daily life it is dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>1. Moses&#8217; supposition meant forty years&#8217; exile (Act_7:25).<\/p>\n<p>2. The supposition of the Military and seamen led to loss of ship, cargo, and property (Act_27:13).<\/p>\n<p>Fatal. In matters concerning Christ and our personal salvation supposition is fatal.<\/p>\n<p>I. Supposing Him to be a Mere Man (Luk_3:23).<\/p>\n<p>1. That was then an excusable blunder, for He came so lowly.<\/p>\n<p>2. It is now, in view of the discovery of His compatriots, and in view of the full revelation of His Word, and the history of the past two thousand years, inexcusable.<\/p>\n<p>3. To make this mistake means:<\/p>\n<p>a. You have not a Saviour.<\/p>\n<p>b. You are yet in your sins, for He is dead.<\/p>\n<p>II. Supposing Him to be Where He was Not (Luk_2:44).<\/p>\n<p>1. Excusable then, remembering the social custom of the time.<\/p>\n<p>2. It is a tragic mistake if made to-day.<\/p>\n<p>3. Do you &quot;suppose&quot; He is<\/p>\n<p>a. In your heart as Saviour and Lord?<\/p>\n<p>b. With you as Friend and Guide?<\/p>\n<p>4. Oh, see that &quot;supposition&quot; is changed into certainty!<\/p>\n<p>III. Supposing Him to be Less than He really Was. (Joh_20:15).<\/p>\n<p>1. Excusable to poor Mary, blinded by grief.<\/p>\n<p>2. But fatal to holiness and fellowship to-day.<\/p>\n<p>3. &quot;A Gardener&quot;-yes-but more than that!<\/p>\n<p>4. Don&#8217;t imagine He-<\/p>\n<p>a. Loves to bury your hopes, and that He is<\/p>\n<p>b.
