When we suffer for his sake.

Christ’s cause and the believer’s are one. He suffered for us, and was himself made perfect by suffering. We are called to suffer for him, and thus to have fellowship with him. "If any man will come after me," &c. "It is through much tribulation," &c. "All that will live godly," &c.

2. When we suffer to his glory.

Religion honored; our graces displayed; Christ’s name magnified. As Nebuchadnezzar exalted God; and Darius also.

II. Why should we desire it?

1. Because it is the will of God.

He designs we should suffer as well as labor. It is our all-wise and all-gracious appointment. We ought to be of one mind with God.

2. From grateful affection for Jesus.

We cannot repay his love: but we can manifest our readiness to suffer for him. Our sacrifices prove the sincerity of our hearts.

3. On account of their sanctifying tendency.

Sufferings tend to humble us; tend to refine us. Like fire, frost, storms, &c. Correct our evil propensities. Render Christ more precious, and heaven more desirable.

4. On account of the promises connected with them.

"If we suffer," &c. If we confess him, and bear the cross, &c. If we follow his steps, &c. "If we overcome," &c.

Application

1.
