We Know the Son of God Is Truth<\/p>\n
"And we know that the Son of God is come, * * that we may know Him that is true, and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ" (1Jn_5:20).<\/p>\n
1. What is Truth? This is the question that was propounded of old, and it has been frequently upon the lips of men.<\/p>\n
We desire to answer this question from the open Bible.<\/p>\n
(1) Christ is Truth.<\/p>\n
"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, * * full of grace and truth" (Joh_1:14).<\/p>\n
The Lord Jesus Christ was not only true, but being true He brought truth into the world.<\/p>\n
"For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (Joh_1:17).<\/p>\n
Our Lord Jesus did not hesitate to tell the disciples: "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (Joh_14:6).<\/p>\n
He, Himself, was Truth.<\/p>\n
(2) The Word is Truth.<\/p>\n
"Sanctify them through Thy Truth: Thy Word is Truth" (Joh_17:17).<\/p>\n
The words which our Lord Jesus spoke were words wholly dependable, wholly true.<\/p>\n
(3) The Holy Spirit is Truth.<\/p>\n
"And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth" (1Jn_5:6).<\/p>\n
Three times, in three chapters, the Spirit is called, "The Spirit of Truth" (see Joh_14:17; Joh_15:26; Joh_16:13).<\/p>\n
The threefold statement above, concerns Christ, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. In this we are assured that the Son of God is Truth–first, in Himself; secondly, in His Word; and thirdly, in His manifestations.<\/p>\n
2. How may we know the Truth? There are three ways through which the Epistle of John tells us that we may know the Truth. Two are negatively stated.<\/p>\n
(1) By walking in the light.<\/p>\n
If we "walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the Truth" (1Jn_1:6).<\/p>\n
(2) By keeping His commandments.<\/p>\n
"He that * * keepeth not His commandments is a liar, and the Truth is not in him" (1Jn_2:4).<\/p>\n
(3) By the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n
"Ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things" (1Jn_2:20).<\/p>\n
The Holy Spirit leads us into all Truth.<\/p>\n
3. The believer's attitude toward the Truth.<\/p>\n
(1) The believer should know the Truth.<\/p>\n
"I have not written unto you because ye know not the Truth, but because ye know it" (1Jn_2:21).<\/p>\n
This should be our great passion–to know the Truth.<\/p>\n
(2) The believer should know he is of the Truth.<\/p>\n
"And hereby we know that we are of the Truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him" (1Jn_3:19).<\/p>\n
Our passion should be to know the Truth, and knowing it to take our stand by it, to align ourselves with it; to stand bravely for it.<\/p>\n
(3) The believer should testify to the Truth.<\/p>\n
"I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the Truth that is in thee" (3Jn_1:3).<\/p>\n
We must never be ashamed to proclaim the Truth.<\/p>\n
(4) The believer should walk in the Truth.<\/p>\n
"I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in Truth" (2Jn_1:4).<\/p>\n
We have had four things suggested: We should know the Truth, we should be of the Truth, we should testify to the Truth, and we should walk in the Truth.<\/p>\n
Let us not leave one of these out.<\/p>\n
What good is it to know the Truth, or to talk about it, unless you are going to live it, to walk in it?<\/p>\n
(5) The believer should be a fellow-helper to the Truth.<\/p>\n
"That we might be fellowhelpers of the Truth" (3Jn_1:8).<\/p>\n
We should not only stand for the Truth ourselves, but we should help all those who stand.<\/p>\n
How greatly do saints who preach the Word of Truth long for the fellowship of those who know the Truth!<\/p>\n
