They were descendants of Canaan's son Heth. One of the seven Canaanitish nations, they dwelt in Hebron and were governed by kings (Deu_7:1; Gen_23:10; 1Ki_10:29). Their land was promised to Israel and it was commanded to destroy them; but Israel did not destroy them entirely (Deu_7:1-2, Deu_7:24; Jos_14:13; Jdg_3:5). Among their prominent personages were Ephron, Ahimelech and Uriah (Gen_49:30; 1Sa_26:1-25; 1Sa_25:1-44; 1Sa_24:1-22; 1Sa_23:1-29; 1Sa_22:1-23; 1Sa_21:1-15; 1Sa_20:1-42; 1Sa_19:1-24; 1Sa_18:1-30; 1Sa_17:1-58; 1Sa_16:1-23; 1Sa_15:1-35; 1Sa_14:1-52; 1Sa_13:1-23; 1Sa_12:1-25; 1Sa_11:1-15; 1Sa_10:1-27; 1Sa_9:1-27; 1Sa_8:1-22; 1Sa_7:1-17; 1Sa_6:1-21; 2Sa_11:6, 2Sa_11:21).
