Business<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Slothful in Business\u201d (Rom_12:11)<\/p>\n<p>There is a story related of a great English nobleman of the last century (Lord Palmerston), who witnessed an accident in London, when a little girl fell down and smashed a pitcher with a quart of milk in it. Lord Palmerston said to her: \u201cMy dear, don\u2019t cry, don\u2019t cry! I have not any change with me now, but I will meet you here tomorrow at twelve o\u2019clock on this bridge, and I will give you a shilling to buy another pitcher and some more milk.\u201d The next day Lord Palmerston was in a business meeting with a large company of gentlemen, and when the hour came to meet the little girl he said, \u201cGentlemen, I have an engagement.\u201d \u201cOh!\u201d was the reply, \u201cbut there is important business going on, sir.\u201d \u201cI cannot help it. I have a previous engagement made yesterday. I must keep the word of my promise to meet the individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In all our business it is well that we mind the Lord\u2019s business. His injunction to us as His servants is: \u201cDo business till I come,\u201d for when He returns He will want to know \u201cwhat business\u201d we have \u201cdone\u201d (Rotherham\u2019s Translation of Luk_19:13, Luk_19:15).<\/p>\n<p>The word for \u201cbusiness\u201d in Rom_12:11, is rendered \u201chaste,\u201d \u201cdiligence,\u201d \u201ccarefulness,\u201d \u201cforwardness,\u201d and \u201cearnest care.\u201d Our business for the Lord should be done\u2014<\/p>\n<p>1. With a set purpose, as Mary when she went with \u201chaste\u201d into the hill country\u2014Luk_1:39.<\/p>\n<p>2. With \u201cdiligence,\u201d as he who \u201cruleth\u201d is exhorted to do\u2014Rom_12:8.<\/p>\n<p>3. With \u201ccare,\u201d as in the sight of God\u20142Co_7:12.<\/p>\n<p>4. With attention to detail, as Paul recognised, when he spoke of the \u201ccarefulness\u201d of the saints\u2019 repentance in Corinth\u20142Co_7:11.<\/p>\n<p>5. With earnestness, as in the case of Titus, when the apostle recognised the \u201cearnest care\u201d in him\u20142Co_8:16.<\/p>\n<p>6. With specific aim, as the Spirit enjoins believers to give \u201cdiligence\u201d to add to their faith\u20142Pe_1:5.<\/p>\n<p>7.
