124. Christ\u2019s Atonement and Advent<\/p>\n
This double truth of atonement and advent might be multiplied. The following brief outline will emphasise:<\/p>\n
1. Christ\u2019s sufferings and glory is the theme of the Scriptures \u201cThe prophets… prophesied… of the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow\u201d (1Pe_1:10-11).<\/p>\n
2. Christ\u2019s suffering and glory was the topic of Christ\u2019s conversation with the two disciples, as He journeyed with them to Emmaus\u2014Luk_24:26.<\/p>\n
3. \u201cTill He come,\u201d we observe the memorial feast which proclaims His death\u20141Co_11:26.<\/p>\n
4. The assurance of the resurrection of our loved ones who have fallen asleep, and the quickening of the living ones, is based on \u201cChrist died\u201d\u20141Th_4:14.<\/p>\n
5. \u201cWho died for us,\u201d are the Spirit\u2019s words as He declares the ground why we are appointed (placed in) to the salvation of the future\u20141Th_5:9, 1Th_5:10.<\/p>\n
6. The Church will be set before the Lord without a spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, because He loved her and gave Himself for her\u2014Eph_5:25.<\/p>\n
7. We are exhorted to be looking for that Blessed Hope, and the appearing of the glory of the great God and Saviour, who gave Himself for us\u2014Tit_2:13.<\/p>\n
The cords of God\u2019s love bind us to the altar of Christ\u2019s sacrifice, and its flame fuses us into God\u2019s nature; and the glory of Christ\u2019s Coming attracts us to the Heaven of His holiness. Since the Lord has such a claim upon us, and we have been called to such a glory, what manner of persons ought we to be? With such a past of His passion, and with such a prospect of His glory, we cannot, if we know Him, be anything else than wholly devoted to Him.<\/p>\n
