158. Christ\u2019s \u201cI Give\u2019s\u201d in John<\/p>\n
The Greek word didomi, coupled with the personal pronoun \u201cI\u201d in the following passages in John\u2019s Gospel, is rendered \u201cwill give,\u201d \u201chave given,\u201d and \u201cshall give.\u201d The word means to give freely, ungrudgingly, and unforced.<\/p>\n
1. The Living Water. \u201cThe water that I shall give\u201d (Joh_4:14). Living, leaping, loving, lifting, lasting, fructifying, and satisfying is this water.<\/p>\n
2. The Satisfying Bread. \u201cBread that I will give\u201d (Joh_6:51). Bruised in death, beneficent in feeding, real in substance, and holy in character is this bread.<\/p>\n
3. The Eternal Life. \u201cI give unto them eternal life\u201d (Joh_10:28). The life is the nature of Him who is Love, and must be eternal in duration.<\/p>\n
4. The Worthy Example. \u201cI have given you an example\u201d (Joh_13:15). He is the Pattern for our imitation and the Power to imitate the Pattern.<\/p>\n
5. The New Commandment. \u201cA new commandment I give\u201d (Joh_13:34). Grace lifts to higher ground than law, and enjoins greater responsibility.<\/p>\n
6. The \u201cMy Peace.\u201d \u201cMy peace I give unto you\u201d (Joh_14:27).<\/p>\n
The peace He leaves is the legacy of the dying man, the peace He gives is the gift of the Living Lord.<\/p>\n
7. The \u201cGiven Words.\u201d \u201cI have given unto them the words… Thy Word\u201d (Joh_17:14). The words give in detail what is found in the Word. The Word is love\u2019s revelation, faith\u2019s foundation, hope\u2019s life, the servant\u2019s authority, the saint\u2019s sanctifier, the pilgrim\u2019s cordial, the Lord\u2019s promise, and the believer\u2019s rule.<\/p>\n
8. The Bestowed Glory. \u201cThe glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them\u201d (Joh_17:22). The Son\u2019s givings are the passings on from the Father.<\/p>\n
