469. \u201cI Will\u201d<\/p>\n
The late William Sloan, of Glasgow, a well-known Christian merchant in Scotland, once said: \u201cI used to live under the \u2018Thou shalt\u2019s\u2019 of the law, but now I live under the \u2018I will\u2019s\u2019 of grace.\u201d What a difference there is between the two. Under the former there is the effort of self and very often failure, but under the latter there is heart response and rest, with victory. Let the following seven \u201cI will\u2019s\u201d of promise speak for themselves.<\/p>\n
1. Rest. \u201cI will give thee rest\u201d (Mat_11:28). Responding to Christ\u2019s \u201cCome unto Me,\u201d we find rest of conscience about our sins, and rest from fear of death and judgment, and rest of mind and heart.<\/p>\n
2. Service. \u201cFollow Me, and I will make you fishers of men\u201d (Mat_4:19). Follow first, and then fish; even then, He must \u201cmake\u201d us fishers, and He promises to do it.<\/p>\n
3. Satisfaction. \u201cI will pour water upon Him that is thirsty\u201d (Isa_44:3). He alone can slake the thirst and satisfy the soul. The dryness of our need is the opportunity for the supply of His grace.<\/p>\n
4. Upholding. In Isa_46:4, the Lord gives us four gracious I will\u2019s: \u201cI will carry,\u201d \u201cI will bear,\u201d \u201cI will carry,\u201d \u201cI will deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n
5. Guidance. \u201cI will even make a way in the wilderness\u201d (Isa_43:19). Where there is no track, He will make one, so that there may be no uncertainty in the path we should tread.<\/p>\n
6. Strength. \u201cI will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness\u201d (Isa_41:10). Here is a trinity of promise from the true God.<\/p>\n
7. Victory. \u201cI will contend with him that contendeth with thee\u201d (Isa_49:25). When the Lord contends with our enemies we may cease to contend with them, for He can do better than we can.<\/p>\n
