Psalms 107<\/p>\n
Key expression: \u201cHis lovingkindness and His wonderful works\u201d (Psa_107:8, Psa_107:15, Psa_107:21, Psa_107:31)\u2014four times. In His heart, \u201clovingkindness.\u201d Once rendered \u201cmercy\u201d (Psa_107:1); four times \u201clovingkindness\u201d (Psa_107:8, Psa_107:15, Psa_107:21, Psa_107:31, R.V.); and once \u201clovingkindness\u201d (Psa_107:43, R.V.). The latter is plural, reckoning as two, \u201clovingkindness\u201d is mentioned seven times.<\/p>\n
There are many traits of Jehovah\u2019s lovingkindness, but the following are found in the Psalms. Often the Hebrew word is rendered \u201cmercy,\u201d as in Psalms 136, where it occurs twenty-six times, in the well-known sentence, \u201cHis mercy (lovingkindness, R.V.) endureth for ever.\u201d His lovingkindness is\u2014<\/p>\n
1. \u201cMarvellous\u201d in its acts (Psa_17:7; Psa_31:21).<\/p>\n
2. Constant in its attendance\u2014Psa_23:6, R.V.<\/p>\n
3. Compassing in its protection\u2014Psa_32:10.<\/p>\n
4. \u201cExcellent\u201d (\u201cprecious,\u201d R.V.) in its benediction (Psa_36:7).<\/p>\n
5. \u201cBetter than life\u201d (Psa_63:3).<\/p>\n
6. Multitudinous in benefit\u2014Psa_69:13, R.V.<\/p>\n
7. \u201cGood\u201d in nature (Psa_69:16, R.V.).<\/p>\n
8. \u201cPlenteous\u201d in resource (Psa_86:15, R.V.).<\/p>\n
9. \u201cGreat\u201d in exercise (Psa_86:13, R.V.).<\/p>\n
10. Satisfying in giving\u2014Psa_90:14, R.V.<\/p>\n
11. \u201cEverlasting\u201d in duration (Psa_100:5, R.V.).<\/p>\n
12. Crowning in bestowment\u2014Psa_103:4.<\/p>\n
13. Quickening in its life\u2014Psa_119:88, Psa_119:124, Psa_119:149, Psa_119:159.<\/p>\n
The Hebrew word is translated \u201cdeal kindly,\u201d \u201ckindness,\u201d \u201cmercy,\u201d \u201cpity,\u201d \u201cfavour,\u201d \u201cgoodness,\u201d \u201cgood deeds,\u201d and \u201clovingkindness;\u201d and in the following cases illustrations will be found of the \u201cexercise\u201d of God\u2019s \u201clovingkindness\u201d (Jer_9:24): thus David pleaded with Jonathan to \u201cdeal kindly\u201d with him (1Sa_20:8), David showed \u201ckindness\u201d to Mephibosheth (2Sa_9:1, 2Sa_9:3, 2Sa_9:7), Jehovah had \u201cmercy\u201d on David (1Ki_3:6), Job\u2019s expressed \u201cpity\u201d to a friend (Job_6:14), Ahasuerus gave \u201cfavour\u201d to Esther (Est_2:17), the \u201cgoodness\u201d of Hezekiah in his life (2Ch_32:32), and the \u201cgood deeds\u201d of Nehemiah for the house of God (Neh_13:14).<\/p>\n
We do well to recall and recount the lovingkindnesses of our God, for they are recorded for our inspiration and our imitation.<\/p>\n
The hand of Jehovah in His loving service is expressed in the repeated sentence, \u201cHis wonderful works.\u201d His \u201cworks\u201d are not merely acts, but \u201cwonderful\u201d ones. The Hebrew word is rendered four times \u201cwonderful works,\u201d and once \u201cwonders\u201d in Psalms 107 (Psa_107:8, Psa_107:15, Psa_107:21, Psa_107:24, Psa_107:31), and it is also translated \u201cmarvellous\u201d (Psa_118:23), \u201chidden\u201d (Deu_30:11), \u201caccomplish\u201d (Lev_22:21), and in the form of a question, \u201ctoo hard\u201d (Gen_18:14).<\/p>\n
His \u201cwonderful works\u201d in some of their achievements are described in the Psalm before us.<\/p>\n
1. Redemption. \u201cRedeemed from the hand of the adversary\u201d (Psa_107:2). <\/p>\n
2. Election. \u201cGathered out of the lands\u201d (Psa_107:3).<\/p>\n
3. Emancipation. \u201cDelivered them out of their distresses\u201d (Psa_107:6).<\/p>\n
4. Direction. \u201cHe led them by a straight way\u201d (Psa_107:7, R.V.).<\/p>\n
5. Satisfaction. \u201cHe satisfieth the longing soul, and the hungry soul He filleth with good\u201d (Psa_107:9).<\/p>\n
6. Salvation. \u201cHe saved them out of their distresses\u201d (Psa_107:13-19).<\/p>\n
7. Pacification. \u201cHe maketh the storm a calm\u201d (Psa_107:23-32).<\/p>\n
8. Transformation. \u201cHe turneth,\u201d etc. (Psa_107:33-37).<\/p>\n
9. Benediction. \u201cHe blesseth,\u201d etc. (Psa_107:38-43).<\/p>\n
