This month,&nbsp;BibleGateway&nbsp;and&nbsp;YouVersion&nbsp;released their 2021 year-in-review reports, revealing top verses and trends&nbsp;on these digital Bible platforms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although some of the challenges of 2021 have been different from the difficulties of 2020&nbsp;and life seems to be returning to the pre-pandemic norm&nbsp;in some places,&nbsp;people are still walking through difficult circumstances. Many continue to turn to Scripture&nbsp;more frequently now than before the COVID-19 pandemic began last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re encouraged to see high levels of Bible engagement again this year because it means people are turning to God and the Bible for answers to their questions,&#8221; YouVersion\u00a0founder Bobby Gruenewald said. &#8220;Even our Verse of the Year points to the heart of the\u00a0YouVersion\u00a0Community to seek God and know Him more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe\u2019re encouraged to see high levels of Bible engagement again this year because it means people are turning to God and the Bible for answers to their questions.&quot; \u2014 @bobbygwald of @YouVersion Click To Tweet <\/p>\n<p>YouVersion\u2019s&nbsp;2021 Verse of the Year (the verse shared, bookmarked, and highlighted most often throughout the year) is Matthew 6:33&nbsp;which says, \u201cBut seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you\u201d (CSB).<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, Bible engagement on&nbsp;YouVersion&nbsp;increased by 10% and continued to rise in the following weeks.&nbsp;In&nbsp;2021, Monday through Saturday engagement was still up by 24% compared to pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<p>\u201cComing off of a record year in 2020, we\u2019re excited to see that so many people are continuing the daily Bible engagement habits they created last year,\u201d said Gruenewald. \u201cThey\u2019re engaging past that initial moment of need and digging deeper to strengthen their relationship with God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2021 alone, the&nbsp;YouVersion&nbsp;Community:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Read 55.8 billion chapters<\/li>\n<li>Played 8.2 billion audio chapters<\/li>\n<li>Created 2.4 billion highlights, bookmarks, and notes<\/li>\n<li>Completed 1.4 billion Bible plan days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the most popular verses on Bible Gateway don\u2019t change significantly from year to year, their 2021 report focused&nbsp;on some of the verses that gained and lost the most traffic compared to last year.<\/p>\n<p>Last year,&nbsp;themes&nbsp;of&nbsp;pandemic, social, political, and end times&nbsp;were unusually prominent in Bible&nbsp;searches.&nbsp;Some verses related to these themes fell dramatically in 2021. Verses such as&nbsp;Isaiah 26:20-21,&nbsp;2 Chronicles 7:13-15,&nbsp;Matthew 24:7,&nbsp;John 16:22, and&nbsp;Proverbs 22:3&nbsp;were searched anywhere from 52-92% fewer times than they were last year.<\/p>\n<p> Verses\u00a0emphasizing faithfulness and unity including Deuteronomy 11:18-20, Jeremiah 3:22 and Zechariah 3:10\u00a0gained 172-296% more traffic in 2021 at @BibleGateway. Among these were verses\u00a0emphasizing faithfulness and unity including\u00a0Deuteronomy 11:18-20,\u00a0Jeremiah 3:22, and\u00a0Zechariah 3:10, which gained 172-296% more traffic this year than last.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u6f72ed2b99f314ebfb70d29a4b2094c3-content\">See also&nbsp; 4 Changes I&#8217;d Make If I Could Start Ministry Over<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The verses that saw the most dramatic increases in traffic this year related to public controversies. Luke 10:18 saw a 518% increase on Bible Gateway&nbsp;after rapper Lil Nas X released his \u201cSatan shoes\u201d in March. This verse quotes Jesus saying, \u201cI watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning\u201d (CSB).<\/p>\n<p>Leviticus 13:45-46,\u00a0which references infected people covering their faces,\u00a0rose 626% when\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0associated with encouraging mask wearing\u00a0and cited as an example of mask wearing and\u00a0quarantining\u00a0in the Bible.<\/p>\n<p> Verses tied to controversies saw the largest jumps at @BibleGateway in 2021. Luke 10:18 jumped 518% after a rapper released &quot;Satan shoes&quot; that included the reference, while Leviticus 13:45-46 rose 626% as it mentions face coverings. Click To Tweet <\/p>\n<p>The search term that saw the biggest increase in traffic in 2021 also got a major boost from pandemic debates. The&nbsp;search&nbsp;word \u201csorceries\u201d or \u201csorcery\u201d&nbsp;saw an&nbsp;increase of&nbsp;193%&nbsp;over 2021.&nbsp;This increase came as some Christians used the lexical connection between the root Greek word for sorcery&nbsp;\u201cpharmakeia\u201d&nbsp;and the&nbsp;modern English word \u201cpharmaceuticals\u201d to&nbsp;claim the Bible warned about vaccines, particularly the COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the search terms \u201cpestilence,\u201d \u201cplague,\u201d and \u201cdisease\u201d saw a 71% decrease in traffic&nbsp;this year, and the search terms \u201cin&nbsp;this world you will have trouble\u201d and \u201cbe not afraid\u201d decreased by 62%.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the top 10 most popular Bible verses on Bible Gateway in 2021:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>John 3:16<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Jeremiah 29:11<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Romans 8:28<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Psalm 23:4<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Romans 12:2<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"6\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Psalm 23:6<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"7\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Philippians&nbsp;4:6<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"8\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Psalm 23:5<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"9\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Philippians 4:13<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"10\" style=\"font-size:21px\">\n<li>Isaiah 41:10<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some of these verses hold the same spot on the\u00a0most popular Bible verses list as they did last year. Others have shifted slightly.
