But unfortunately, most have also received some harmful pointers when it comes to ministry.<\/p>\n<p><em>Facts &amp; Trends<\/em> recently took to social media and asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the worst piece of ministry advice you\u2019ve ever received?\u201d Here\u2019s what people said:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u201cI had a pastor tell me he always gets a boring preacher to fill in when he\u2019s away. Says it makes his church appreciate him more. Said I should do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2. \u201cI was told, \u2018Don\u2019t get too close to your people\u2019 by a professor in seminary, who also said, \u2018Don\u2019t show emotions.\u2019 Worst thing ever said to me. Sadly, he later had a nervous breakdown. I don\u2019t judge him, but I wonder if he was able to have close friends and connections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. \u201c\u2018Ministry is a job like any other. 40 hours a week means 40 hours. If people want to talk to you, they should contact your office, not home.\u2019 Said by an applicant for a youth ministry position I was hiring. That person\u2019s services were not required.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<p>4. \u201c\u2018Never state that the person whose funeral you&#8217;re taking is now in heaven with Jesus.\u2019 The reason given: \u2018What are you going to say when you&#8217;re not sure that they are?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>5. \u201cMake her a Sunday School teacher and then she will be more faithful to attend church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6. \u201cI was told by a senior leader, \u2018I have to make the hospital visit first so they will know I love them before they know you love them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u18ccd4bdc080bb9effc9864d19bb8ccc-content\">See also&nbsp; Why Pastors Must Acknowledge Their Own Needs<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>7. \u201cNever let your people get between you and the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8. \u201cOnly fight for your own ministry. Make sure it gets first billing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>9. \u201cSometimes you just gotta toot your own horn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>10. \u201cOnce you finish seminary, make sure your first job is at a First Baptist Church\u2014no matter what the job is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11. \u201cNever look \u2018em in the eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>12. \u201cI was told to never get close to anyone in the church. Never be friends. Keep everyone at arm&#8217;s length. I didn\u2019t listen to that advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>13.&nbsp; \u201cYou shouldn&#8217;t have any music if your church doesn&#8217;t have good singers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>14. \u201cI was told to lead a community group but not use the Bible. I was told to use a self-help book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>15. \u201cMy husband had a repeat complaint that he \u2018preached too much from the Bible\u2019 and \u2018they want to hear other new ideas.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>16. \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t get too close to anyone. Remember, Jesus entrusted himself to no man.\u2019 Wait&#8230;what?!
