But there will be times\u2014because we\u2019re staying home\u2014we have more time on our hands.<\/p>\n<p>One way to be productive is to read books that develop us as leaders.<\/p>\n<p>We asked Devin Maddox, B&amp;H trade book publisher, for some reading recommendations for anyone who leads in a ministry context. Here\u2019s what he suggested:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Leadership and the One Minute Manager: A Situational Approach to Leading Others<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;by Ken Blanchard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe framework in this little book is one I use on a daily basis for situational&nbsp;leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Leading Change&nbsp;by John Kotter<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis falls into the category of \u2018classic.\u2019 Now&#8217;s the time to catch up on the classics we\u2019ve missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Designed to Lead: The Church and Leadership Development<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Eric Geiger and Kevin Peck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know of a leadership book that is as good at leadership&nbsp;theology, providing frameworks, and some really tangible constructs for leading from anywhere in an organization\/church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Andrew Peterson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis book is the best encourager for anyone&nbsp;who ever has to make anything in their work (which is basically everybody).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Jen Wilkin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my favorite primer for beginning to study the Bible for men as well as women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Greg McKeown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just can&#8217;t get away from how helpful this book is at forcing me to clarify priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment\u2019s Notice<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Todd Henry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI manage my schedule not only in terms of time, but also energy, because of this helpful resource.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Renewing Minds: Serving Church and Society Through Christian Higher Education<\/em><\/strong><strong> by David S. Dockery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people could easily mistake this as a manifesto for Christian colleges, but I would characterize it as a theology of how to teach people to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Institutional Intelligence: How to Build an Effective Organization<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Gordon T. Smith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis should be required reading for anybody who has to work with other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u39ad91099f50abbdc8934bd5d306c8fb-content\">See also&nbsp; 8 Ways to Persevere in Ministry<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God\u2019s Work<\/em><\/strong><strong> by Timothy Keller<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are reading this book as a team, and it\u2019s a helpful foundation for a self-examined life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Books to read with your congregation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As churches across the nation are temporarily halting in-person worship gatherings and on-campus ministry activities in response to the coronavirus outbreak, church leaders are scrambling to figure out how to maintain continuity in their ministries and keep their congregations on the same page.<\/p>\n<p>B&amp;H Publishing is providing a low-cost solution to ministry problems that result from COVID-19 social distancing and quarantines.
