I\u2019m from urban Baltimore. I would never have thought I would be in this place,\u201d said Evans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know God could have used someone else. The fact that He\u2019s allowed me the opportunity to do this with my weaknesses and with my flaws, it shows me grace, it shows me mercy, it shows me gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/div>\n<p>Due to the historic nature of the study Bible and commentary, the Museum of the Bible informed Evans they will be placing those publications on display in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Evans said he wanted to create <em>The Tony Evans Study Bible<\/em> and <em>The Tony Evans Bible Commentary<\/em> to \u201cshow the kingdom thread throughout all the books of the Bible and to help readers see how eternity and history are connected by this unifying theme of the glory of God through the advancement of His kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<p>For Evans, \u201cyou should study the Bible to find out what the King is up to and how you fit into this kingdom program,\u201d he said. \u201cNow you\u2019re not just studying the Bible, you\u2019re finding out how you fit into the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He is the senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, and the founder of The Urban Alternative, a media ministry whose radio broadcasts are heard by millions each week on more than 1,400 radio outlets across 130 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Evans has been breaking racial barriers for much of his ministry. In 1982, he became the first African American to graduate with a doctoral degree from Dallas Theological Seminary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be the first of anything is an honor,\u201d said Evans. \u201cBut you want to handle honors in the right way\u2014to carry yourself in a way that recognizes you are a tool that God didn\u2019t have to use. You are privileged because He used you. That ought to make you a better servant, not a bigger star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans also noted there being a \u201cdownside\u201d to being the first African American to reach certain milestones because it means \u201cit took a long time before African Americans were allowed in our major institutions of biblical learning due to segregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u823d28ef4bd82754daceee5a2627946f-content\">See also&nbsp; 4 Changes I&#8217;d Make If I Could Start Ministry Over<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He said that while he is excited, it\u2019s also \u201cdisappointing that I had to be the first because it took that long for Christians to catch up to righteousness when it came to justice and the issue of race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans said the root of divisions, like those surrounding race, come from people not having and exercising a worldview driven by God\u2019s kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled being rejected by a church because of his race. \u201cThat\u2019s an illustration of how I was hearing something preached and wasn\u2019t seeing it worked out in society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Helping people grasp a kingdom-oriented mindset has been part of Evans\u2019 ministry and is a reason he developed his study Bible and commentary.<\/p>\n<p>If an individual develops a \u201ccomprehensive kingdom approach\u201d to life, Evans said they can see how the Bible addresses everything they face. \u201cI\u2019ve not found an issue yet that a kingdom approach will not address in a simple form.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201c<em>The Tony Evans Study Bible<\/em> represents five decades of Dr. Evans\u2019 faithful Bible study and teaching,\u201d said Trevin Wax, director for Bibles and reference at Lifeway Christian Resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTony Evans is well known and respected for his practical teaching and application of Scripture. My prayer is that Dr. Evans\u2019 study Bible will equip and empower readers of God\u2019s Word, so they better understand what it means to live according to God\u2019s kingdom agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans has served as the chaplain of the NBA\u2019s Dallas Mavericks for more than three decades and counting, the longest standing NBA chaplaincy.
