Over-performing Hollywood expectations, Overcomer<\/em> pulled in an estimated $8.2 million for opening weekend.<\/p>\n

The haul, good for third place at the box office, was the third largest for the Kendrick brothers, trailing 2015’s War Room<\/em> ($11.3 million) and 2011’s Courageous<\/em> ($9.1 million).<\/p>\n

Overcomer<\/em>‘s impressive debut came while showing in less theaters than any other movie in the top 10 and roughly half as many as the others in the top five.<\/p>\n

According to the film website Box Office Mojo, the movie “was well received by opening weekend audiences, which gave the film an “A+” CinemaScore and a 99% audience score on RottenTomatoes, suggesting another long run at the domestic box office for one of their films.”<\/p>\n

Previously, Box Office Mojo reported the studio was expecting a $6 million weekend, but the site was skeptical Overcomer<\/em> would even reach that.<\/p>\n

Despite noting the Kendrick’s past success, the site wrote, “With this film, however, we’ve been having a hard time finding comps within the genre and target audience to justify a forecast as high as $6 million.”<\/p>\n

They estimated it would garner around $5 million and finish just outside the top 10.<\/p>\n

Building off the successful opening, Overcomer<\/em> will look to expand to additional theaters and draw more moviegoers in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
