{"id":31904,"date":"2022-09-10T15:48:35","date_gmt":"2022-09-10T20:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/evidence-of-biblical-story-found-in-layers-of-jerusalem-ash\/"},"modified":"2022-09-10T15:48:35","modified_gmt":"2022-09-10T20:48:35","slug":"evidence-of-biblical-story-found-in-layers-of-jerusalem-ash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/evidence-of-biblical-story-found-in-layers-of-jerusalem-ash\/","title":{"rendered":"Evidence of Biblical Story Found in Layers of Jerusalem Ash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-98389\">Francesco Hayez &#8211; Wikicommons<\/div>\n<p><em>By Aaron Earls<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Bible describes King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon laying siege to Jerusalem and specifically burning down the temple, the palace and \u201call the great houses\u201d (2 Kings 25:9).<\/p>\n<p>A group of archaeologists believe they\u2019ve found one of those great houses and their discoveries support the biblical story.<\/p>\n<p>The Mount Zion Archaeological Project, co-directed by UNC Charlotte professors Shimon Gibson and James Tabor, as well as Haifa University fellow Rafi Lewis, announced their uncovering an arrowhead, potsherds and a piece of jewelry among other artifacts in a layer of ash at an excavation in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor archaeologists, an ashen layer can mean a number of different things,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cIt could be ashy deposits removed from ovens; or it could be localized burning of garbage. However, in this case, the combination of an ashy layer full of artifacts, mixed with arrowheads, and a very special ornament indicates some kind of devastation and destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The arrowheads, known as \u201cScythian arrowheads\u201d and used by Babylonian warriors, have been found at other archaeological sites containing remnants of wars and conflicts during the 7th and 6th centuries BC.<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-98391\">Scythian arrowhead &#8211; Mt Zion Archaeological Expedition\/Virginia Withers<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTogether, this evidence points to the historical conquest of the city by Babylon because the only major destruction we have in Jerusalem for this period is the conquest of 587\/586 BCE,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the rare discovery of jewelry, Gibson speculated that their excavation site could be one of those \u201cgreat houses\u201d mentioned specifically in Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis spot would have been at an ideal location, situated as it is close to the western summit of the city with a good view overlooking Solomon&#8217;s Temple and Mount Moriah to the north-east,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u42c3db4b87825b3d918d4320343296bb-content\">See also&nbsp; 3 Practical Steps for Reaching the Mission Field in Your Neighborhood<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>2 Kings 25 describes the suffering and destruction unleashed by the Babylonians in their siege of Jerusalem. The artifacts recovered mirror this description.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the kind of jumble that you would expect to find in a ruined household following a raid or battle,\u201d Gibson said.<\/p>\n<p>This type of discovery is what makes archaeology so captivating, according to Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very exciting to be able to excavate the material signature of any given historical event, and even more so regarding an important historical event such as the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem,\u201d said the co-director of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on a recent similar discovery, G.B. Howell Jr., editor for <em>Biblical Illustrator<\/em>, said, \u201cThose who study biblical archaeology are very careful not to say that a particular find&nbsp;<em>proves<\/em>&nbsp;the Bible.
