{"id":31984,"date":"2022-09-10T15:51:43","date_gmt":"2022-09-10T20:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/4-essentials-every-church-planter-needs\/"},"modified":"2022-09-10T15:51:43","modified_gmt":"2022-09-10T20:51:43","slug":"4-essentials-every-church-planter-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/4-essentials-every-church-planter-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Essentials Every Church Planter Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><em>By Toby Dehay<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My friend and mentor, Dr. Charles Brock, went to be with the Lord in November 2018. Although I only knew him as an older man, we spent enough time together for me to live vicariously in his past through his accounts of planting a church as an 18-year-old in rural Missouri and his adventures of starting indigenous churches in the Philippines with his wife Dottie and their children.<\/p>\n<p>Brock taught me many things regarding evangelism and church planting. Here are a few of his funnier sayings that demonstrate the tenacity he brought to evangelism:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c\u2018No Trespassing\u2019 signs don\u2019t really mean that. They\u2019re there to scare away the crazies, not evangelists.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m going to hurt in this chair at home, or I\u2019m going to hurt while fishing. I chose fishing.\u201d (Brock was 79 years old and had multiple sclerosis. His wife would encourage him to stay home to take care of himself, but he HAD to get to his local Wal-Mart or go door-to-door to share the gospel\u2014what he called \u2018fishing.\u2019)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhen someone says \u2018no\u2019 to the gospel, they don\u2019t really mean it until the third time. When I hear \u2018no\u2019 three times, I know they mean it.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Humor aside, in his book \u201cIndigenous Church Planting,\u201d Brock provides four essentials to church planting that we tend to overlook. He anchors the following four church-planting essentials to Paul\u2019s words in 1 Thessalonians 1:5:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBecause our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, in the Holy Spirit, and with full assurance. You know how we lived among you for your benefit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<h3><strong>1. The first essential in church planting is the Holy Spirit.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Brock wrote, \u201cFrom beginning to end, our source of strength and wisdom comes from the indwelling Holy Spirit.\u201d Without the Holy Spirit, we\u2019re not planting a church; we\u2019re hosting a social gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Brock added, \u201cExtensive surveys are a part of my life as a church planter, and the study of maps and population trends are a normal part of my approach to church planting. But I must emphasize that if all of my fruit is the result of such human efforts, I have missed the mark and the corresponding walk with God that Paul knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. The second essential is the Word of God, the Bible.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Charles famously said, \u201cWe must remember that what God\u2019s Word says is more important and more powerful than anything we can say about it.\u201d We tend to get caught up in our presentation of the gospel over the message itself.<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAm I confident God\u2019s Word is sufficient to save the lost and disciple the believer? If so, am I using and applying it?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAm I spending more time reading church-planting books which reference the Bible, or am I studying the Bible to learn about church planting?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u5a94628e0f2cc75ac1f00438ae573755-content\">See also&nbsp; 3 Practical Steps for Reaching the Mission Field in Your Neighborhood<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I have a ton of church-planting books, but nothing compares to what God\u2019s Word says about His church.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. The third essential in church planting is the sower.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While the \u201cy\u2019all come\u201d attitude is practically dead, it\u2019s still alive and strong when we put more effort into creating a Sunday morning atmosphere\u2014complete with the catchiest sermon series titles and on-stage clothing choices\u2014than we do the gospel.<\/p>\n<p>Now, please don\u2019t send me hate mail. Put effort into your Sunday morning atmosphere, but not at the expense of sowing the gospel seed into your community.<\/p>\n<p>Brock reminded planters the Christian life, \u201cis not a way of life to be entered into lightly or for any reason other than the clear, inescapable call of God.\u201d He also wrote, \u201cThe harvest is dying on the vine due to a lack of church planters.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. The fourth essential in planting churches is the soil, the people.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In chapter 4 of his Gospel, Mark provides a great example of the various types of soil the sower will encounter. Some hearts are hard; other hearts allow the things of the world to crowd out the gospel. Then, there are those Brock would call the \u201chungry fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Planters should not only study in public places to build relationships but should engage the community purposefully through local schools, civic clubs, and festivals. These relationships are important.<\/p>\n<p>The harder relationships are the every-day, everywhere-you-go types, such as the clerk at the store, the person waiting beside you at the doctor\u2019s office, and your neighbor three doors down. People are everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>A lady once asked me, \u201cHow do you know if someone is lost?\u201d I responded, \u201cJust assume they are and share the gospel!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Have you been fishing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When Brock would call me, he\u2019d first ask about my family and then get right to evangelism, asking, \u201cHave you been fishing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pastors, planters, leaders, and church members, I ask you, \u201cHave you been fishing lately?\u201d The four principles listed above are not only true for church planters, but also apply to every-day, as-you-go opportunities for evangelism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe harvest is abundant, but the workers are few\u201d (Luke 10:2b).
