Chi Wai Wu, general secretary of Hong Kong Church Renewal Movement, said that a prayer meeting outside the government complex ended with a singing of \u201cSing Hallelujah to the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christian pastors and leaders have been at the forefront of the democracy movement in Hong Kong and often served as a buffer between other protestors and police.<\/p>\n<p>They sang \u201cSing Hallelujah to the Lord\u201d as they tried to keep both sides calm, according to <em>World<\/em> and&nbsp;<em>Asia Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BEST #extradition protest poster: &quot;Stop Using Baton Or We Sing Hallelujah To The Lord&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Photo by my colleague @jamespomfret @Reuters pic.twitter.com\/zhUIY3Iuft<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; SJ (@SijiaJ) June 16, 2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Writers in Hong Kong have reported that the song is the first thing they heard when covering the protests.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong, which became part of China in 1997 after 150 years of operating as a British colony, is supposed to be able to govern itself under a policy known as \u201cone country, two systems\u201d until 2047.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u3f8084eb2dd9192605a86d2aabb706aa-content\">See also&nbsp; What Churches Must Do to Reach Gen Z<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, Chinese mainland leaders have pressured the Hong Kong government to cede control.
