Next summer, kids will grab their hard hats and head to the construction site with \u201cConcrete & Cranes,\u201d the 2020 Vacation Bible School theme from Lifeway Christian Resources.<\/p>\n

In \u201cConcrete & Cranes,\u201d kids will discover how towering skyscrapers are carefully constructed on a rock solid foundation. And by studying five stories from the life of Jesus, kids will learn how they too can build their lives on a sure foundation\u2014Christ and His gospel.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a self-proclaimed \u2018power tool princess,\u2019 I\u2019m excited to have a theme of bulldozers and backhoes, rivets and rebar,\u201d said Melita Thomas, VBS specialist for Lifeway. \u201cThis isn\u2019t your typical \u2018birthday party construction theme.\u2019 It\u2019s skyscrapers and cranes popping up all over an almost futuristic-looking urban landscape that\u2019s colorful and whimsical.\u201d<\/p>\n

While preparing for the 2020 VBS theme, Thomas said she\u2019s watched a city skyline undergo transformation outside of Lifeway\u2019s downtown office windows.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod led us to this theme long before Nashville exploded into \u2018construction central,\u2019 she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s been great for our research. One of the most striking things we\u2019ve noticed is how deep workers have to dig before anything can be built up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are spiritual parallels there,\u201d she continued. \u201cKids must establish strong spiritual foundations in order to keep from tumbling when the storms of life come.\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cConcrete and Cranes,\u201d kids will learn how to build their lives on the foundations of God\u2019s love, forgiveness, declaration of worth, and His promises. They\u2019ll then tie these lessons together by exploring the parable of the wise and foolish builders to learn how a foundation in Christ changes one\u2019s life trajectory.<\/p>\n

But kids won\u2019t walk out of VBS as independent contractors, thinking they have to make a go at the Christian life alone. Rather, they\u2019ll learn God is intimately involved in the process of sanctification\u2014a truth that comes from the 2020 VBS theme verse of Philippians 1:6.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur theme verse tells kids that when God starts a good work, He\u2019s sees it through to completion,\u201d said Thomas. \u201cThat\u2019s incredibly freeing because it means we don\u2019t have to work everything out ourselves or be perfect. God is the master builder and will never leave us to fend for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

VBS remains one of the most popular church programs in the U.S., Lifeway Research shows. Six in 10 Americans say they went to VBS growing up, and 95% of parents whose child attended VBS say it provided a positive experience.<\/p>\n

VBS also continues to be a leading outreach event for churches. \u201cLast summer, more than 59,000 people made professions of faith as a direct result of VBS,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n
