Visitors to BibleGateway.com were searching the pages of Scripture for love, whether they spoke English, Spanish, or even emoji.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove\u201d was the most popular English keyword search at the Bible reading website in 2016. \u201cAmor\u201d topped the Spanish list. The heart emoji was the second most searched for emoji at BibleGateway.<\/p>\n

The word \u201cheart\u201d ranked 16th in English, while the Spanish word \u201ccorazon\u201d was 8th. \u201cLove one another\u201d finished the year as the 17th most popular English keyword search.<\/p>\n

The top 10 English keyword searches this year were:<\/p>\n

  1. Love<\/li>\n
  2. Faith<\/li>\n
  3. Peace<\/li>\n
  4. Hope<\/li>\n
  5. Joy<\/li>\n
  6. Prayer<\/li>\n
  7. Holy Spirit<\/li>\n
  8. Grace<\/li>\n
  9. Healing<\/li>\n
  10. Forgiveness<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The only significant change to the list from last year is the frequency of searches for \u201cmarriage.\u201d In 2015, marriage was the 6th most-searched term, likely due to the same-sex marriage ruling that year. This year, the word marriage fell to 11th.<\/p>\n

    While many words were popular among English and Spanish speakers\u2014the top three were the same in both languages\u2014some differences were present.<\/p>\n

    Spanish speakers were more likely to search for words like: misericordia (mercy), diezmo (tithe), ofrenda (offering), pecado (sin), and obediencia (obedience).<\/p>\n

    On the English side, healing, marriage, strength, fear, children, trust, forgive, salvation, and worship were among the terms that did not make the Spanish top 25.<\/p>\n

    In all, 13 terms were unique to the English or Spanish list.<\/p>\n

    But words were not the only thing Bible readers could search for on BibleGateway.com.<\/p>\n

    2016 marked the first year emojis, small digital images or icons frequently included on smartphone keyboards, could be used to find related Bible verses.<\/p>\n

    These were the most frequently searched for emojis in 2016 at BibleGateway:<\/p>\n

    4. 😇  Smiling Face With Halo<\/li>\n
    5. 😂  Face With Tears of Joy<\/li>\n
    6. ⛅  Sun Behind Cloud<\/li>\n
    7. 😍  Smiling Face With Heart-Shaped Eyes<\/li>\n
    8. 😁  Smiling Face With Smiling Eyes<\/li>\n
    9. 😀  Grinning Face<\/li>\n
    10. 😭  Loudly Crying Face<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      While an emoji Bible does exist, many of the emoji searches at BibleGateway bring up ordinary text verses containing the word corresponding to the emoji.<\/p>\n

      Searching for 🙏  gives you verses with \u201cpray.\u201d The 😂  emoji shows Bible verses containing \u201cjoy,\u201d while 😭  brings up verses with \u201cweep.\u201d<\/p>\n
