Those films\u2014\u201cNoah,\u201d \u201cHeaven is for Real,\u201d \u201cSon of God,\u201d and \u201cGod\u2019s Not Dead\u201d\u2014are among the top 20 grossing films of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>And movie audiences may want more, according to a survey of 1,054 Americans from Nashville-based Lifeway Research. Researchers found that half of Americans (56 percent) say they wish there were more movies with Christian values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFaith-based movies are no longer a niche,\u201d said Scott McConnell, director of Lifeway Research. \u201cIt\u2019s smart economics\u2014if you make a film that appeals to that audience, they will show up.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='code-block code-block-1' style='margin: 8px 0;clear: both'> <\/div>\n<p>Movies with an explicitly Christian message\u2014like \u201cGod\u2019s Not Dead\u201d\u2014have done especially well. The independent film was made for $2 million and has earned more than $59 million at the box office. That\u2019s more than high-budget projects like \u201cMuppets Most Wanted\u201d or the critically acclaimed \u201cThe Grand Budapest Hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kris Fuhr, founder of Moviegal Marketing, said Christian movie fans want films with a clear presentation of faith. That\u2019s been true in the past for films like \u201cFireproof\u201d and \u201cCourageous,\u201d as well as more recent movies like \u201cSon of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have a movie where the title is almost a doctrinal statement\u2014the audience will come out,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople want their faith to be affirmed.\u201d Films with a more subtle faith message may not do as well, said Fuhr.<\/p>\n<p>In the survey, Lifeway Research asked Americans to respond to the statement: \u201cI wish there were more movies that reflected Christian values.\u201d Those who go to church weekly are most likely to agree (91 percent). Those who never go to church (18 percent) are least likely to agree.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;margin-top:0em;margin-bottom:1em\">\n<div class=\"centered-text-area\">\n<div class=\"centered-text\" style=\"float: left\">\n<div class=\"u2d4ce98e8b2e09c91087888dd682dfb4-content\">See also&nbsp; U.S. Pastors Identify Their Greatest Needs<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ctaButton\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Self identified born-again, evangelical, or fundamentalist Christians are more likely to agree (84 percent) than other Americans (45 percent.) Americans who live in the Midwest (62 percent) and South (63 percent) are also more interested in more Christian films than those in the Northeast (48 percent) or the West (44 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of middle-aged and older Americans agree, including those 45 to 54 (63 percent), 55 to 64 (66 percent), and 65 and older (65 percent). Americans under 30 (43 percent) are least interested in more films with Christian values.<\/p>\n<p>Two other major films with Christian themes, \u201cLeft Behind\u201d and \u201cExodus: Gods and Kings\u201d are due out later this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Methodology: The online survey of adult Americans was conducted March 25, 2013. A sample of an online panel representing the adult population of the United States was invited to participate. Responses were weighted by region, age, ethnicity, gender and income to more accurately reflect the population.The completed sample is 1,054 online surveys. The sample provides 95% confidence that the sampling error from this panel does not exceed +3.1%.
