In the New Testament, the holy Spirit is referred to by many names and each name explains a different aspect of this mighty power. For example: the Spirit of truth (John 16:13), the Spirit of faith (2 Corinthians 4:13), the Spirit of holiness (Romans 1:4), the Spirit of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7) and the Spirit of love all describe the operations of God’s power on His children.

Some Bible translations give the holy Spirit the character of a person, for example, the Amplified Version has Jesus speaking to His Apostles, “Jesus said I have still many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them or to take them upon you or to grasp them now. But when He, the spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message (on His own authority); but He will tell whatever He hears (from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him), and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come (that will happen in the future)." John 16:12, 13 Amplified Bible

In these verses, the word for “He” in the Greek is the word “heautou” and may be rendered in the masculine, feminine, or neuter genders. Thus “He” or “It” has no reference to a person, but to God's Holy Spirit (of power and influence). It is only by God’s direction that the Body of Christ comes to the knowledge and understanding of all Truth.

When reading Acts 2:2,3 it becomes evident that the Spirit is not a person but an awesome, invisible power. "Suddenly there came from the sky a sound as of a strong rushing blast of wind filling the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues of what looked like fire…..They were all filled with the Holy Spirit." Weymouth

If we would be used of God, we should seek to be guided by Him. We learn to hear His voice through the scriptures and we are to realize his energizing power through the Spirit of Truth. This does not mean that we will always completely understand every Bible verse or prophecy, but without the holy Spirit—the Spirit of Truth—we will never have even the opportunity to know the Truth.

God’s holy Spirit is the holy power and influence of God.
