Our lives are not made full by abundant physical possessions, especially when we consider the transitory nature of our lives. Covetous is an unquenchable thirst for physical things we think we need, but the lesson of the Day of Atonement is to hunger and thirst for righteousness, which will make us truly happy and complete. Spiritual satisfaction comes from the grace of God through Christ, a satisfaction that will last through eternity. Henry Thoreau suggests that, in this current physical life, the richest man is the one with the least expensive pleasures. The richest pleasures are spiritual, those accumulated through humbly serving others.
