C. The devil does not like faithful preachers and the truth which they proclaim<\/p>\n
1. He would turn every preacher into a weak, mushy, compromising, apologetic traitor if he could.<\/p>\n
2. It just seems that old Satan is finding an abundant supply of recruits to assist him in his destructive and diabolical efforts.<\/p>\n
3. We must awaken to the fact that the devil has declared war against the preaching of the church, which opposes and exposes error.<\/p>\n
DISCUSSION:<\/p>\n
A. WHAT IS PREACHING?<\/p>\n
1. Consider these definitions:<\/p>\n
a. “Preaching, in it’s strictest sense, is the public use of speech with intent to reveal God to man”.<\/p>\n
b. “Preaching is the communication of truth by man to man. It has two essential elements, truth and personality. Neither can it spare and still be preaching.”<\/p>\n
c. Note Paul’s statement, “We have this treasure (truth) in earthen vessels (personality)” (2 Cor. 4:7).<\/p>\n
d. Thus, again, Preaching is the combination of “truth” and “personality”<\/p>\n
2. The preacher is:<\/p>\n
a. A man under orders – not his own master<\/p>\n
b. One whose life is consistent with the message he proclaims<\/p>\n
c. You cannot divorce the preacher from his preaching. In a sense the man is his message; the preacher is his proclamation; the speaker is his sermon.<\/p>\n
d. “Take heed to thyself (preacher) and unto the doctrine (preaching)” (1 Tim. 4:16).<\/p>\n
e. Jesus was what He said _ Acts 1:1<\/p>\n
3. The divine words that describe preaching<\/p>\n
a. kerussw – “to proclaim as a herald”<\/p>\n
1) Matthew 11:1<\/p>\n
2) Romans 10:15<\/p>\n
b. evaggelizw – “to tell good news, an evangelist”<\/p>\n
1) 1 Corinthians 1:17<\/p>\n
2) Galatians 1:8<\/p>\n
c. kataggellw – “to tell thoroughly”<\/p>\n

B. THE IMPORTANCE OF PREACHING<\/p>\n
1. Preaching has been important to God through the ages<\/p>\n
a. Noah was a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5).<\/p>\n
b. Moses was God’s prophet.<\/p>\n
c. The prophets were preachers.<\/p>\n
d. Jesus came preaching.<\/p>\n
e. The apostles were preachers<\/p>\n
f. The world-wide commission calls for preaching (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15,16).<\/p>\n
g. God’s appraisal of preaching _ 1 Corinthians 1:21<\/p>\n
2. The place and priority of preaching in the New Testament<\/p>\n
a. Preaching is God’s divinely appointed means of spreading the gospel<\/p>\n
1) Romans 10:9-17<\/p>\n
2) Preaching is vital!<\/p>\n
b. Preaching is the means by which faith is produced in the hearer<\/p>\n
1) Facts are proclaimed (1 Cor. 15:1-4).<\/p>\n
2) Faith pre-supposes revelation (Rom. 10:17).<\/p>\n
3) Faith necessitates an object.<\/p>\n
c. Preaching the Word is God’s way of regenerating man.<\/p>\n
1) The Word is living – the Preacher’s message is alive!<\/p>\n
a) Hebrews 4:12<\/p>\n
b) 1 Peter 1:23<\/p>\n
2) The Word imparts and develops life<\/p>\n
a) John 6:63<\/p>\n
b) 1 Peter 2:1-2<\/p>\n
d. Preaching is the means by which the believer is built up in the holy faith.<\/p>\n
1) Colossians 1:28-29_ Note the three-fold objective of Paul’s preaching<\/p>\n
a) To Warn – Man is lost. Sin will condemn. God’s wrath is real.<\/p>\n
b) To Teach – Present a Savior. How to be saved. How to live.<\/p>\n
c) To Present – To develop. To equip. To present to Christ.<\/p>\n
2) 2 Timothy 3:15-17_Note the seven-fold work of the Word<\/p>\n
a) Make Wise to Salvation<\/p>\n
b) For Doctrine<\/p>\n
c) For Correction<\/p>\n
d) For Reproof<\/p>\n
e) For Instruction in Righteousness<\/p>\n
f) Develop Christian Maturity<\/p>\n
g) To Thoroughly Furnish<\/p>\n
e. Preaching is God’s means of reaching and involving the whole man.<\/p>\n
1) Intellect, by which man acquires facts, information and knowledge.<\/p>\n
2) Emotions, with which man reacts to knowledge – stirred, aroused.<\/p>\n
3) Will, the volition to act favorably or unfavorably toward that which has been received.<\/p>\n
C. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LISTENERS<\/p>\n
1. Acts 17:11<\/p>\n
a. “Readiness of mind” – eagerness<\/p>\n
b. “Whether those things were so” – whether it is in accordance with Scripture<\/p>\n
2. Luke 8:18<\/p>\n
a. “How ye hear” – attitude is vital<\/p>\n
b. Open mind and open Bible<\/p>\n
c. Psalm 119:97<\/p>\n
3. Mark 4:24<\/p>\n
a. “Take heed what ye hear” – search the Scriptures<\/p>\n
b. Sound doctrine is a must<\/p>\n
