TITLE: The Need for a Savior<\/p>\n
PROPOSITION: Man needs a savior because 1) Man has a sin problem, 2) Man cannot set his own terms of pardon, and 3) Man needs someone who can mediate before God on behalf of man.<\/p>\n
OBJECTIVES: Each person should be able to teach others the problem of sin, the reason we can’t remedy this situation, and what it was that Jesus did to remedy this situation for us.<\/p>\n
AIM: To help each person understand the role of the savior in God’s plan for man’s salvation.<\/p>\n
INTRODUCTION:<\/p>\n
1. Read: Romans 7:24, 25<\/p>\n
2. About the Text:<\/p>\n
1) In Romans 7, Paul is discussing the situation in which man finds himself when confronted with his own sin.<\/p>\n
2) This is a situation where the body is in conflict with the spirit.<\/p>\n
3) On the one hand, the body is subject to temptation that leads to sin.<\/p>\n
4) On the other hand, the spirit wants to obey God’s law.<\/p>\n
5) But the presence of sin prevents God’s law from being fully obeyed.<\/p>\n
6) What is the remedy for this situation?<\/p>\n
7) It is Jesus Christ, the Savior of man–the Deliverer.<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION: Why do we need a savior?<\/p>\n
I. Man has a sin problem.<\/p>\n
1. What is sin?<\/p>\n
1) The word literally means “to miss.”<\/p>\n
2) 1 John 3:4, “Sin is the transgression of the Law.”<\/p>\n
3) When we sin, we sin against God.<\/p>\n
a. Genesis 39:9 Joseph “sin against God.”<\/p>\n
b. Psalm 54:4 “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.”<\/p>\n
4) God reveals himself to us so that we will NOT sin against him.<\/p>\n
a. Exodus 20:20.<\/p>\n
b. John 1:29<\/p>\n
2. Where did sin first start?<\/p>\n
1) Satan is the father of all lies and of all sin.<\/p>\n
a. John 8:44<\/p>\n

2) Man first sinned in the garden of Eden. Genesis 3:1ff<\/p>\n
3) God first promised to deal with the problem of sin in Genesis 3:15.<\/p>\n
3. What are the consequences of sin?<\/p>\n

II. Man cannot set his own terms of righteousness.<\/p>\n
1. Can the one who offends tell the one who is offended what he is going to do to be forgiven?<\/p>\n
2. We cannot devise a righteousness of our own.<\/p>\n

3. Jesus came to provide a plan of righteousness for us.<\/p>\n

4. Therefore, we must accept the terms of God’s righteousness that are through the gospel.<\/p>\n
1) Romans 1:16, 17–We learn the terms for righteousness through the gospel.<\/p>\n
2) 2 Corinthians 5:16-6:2–It is our responsibility to be reconciled to God–to accept the terms of God’s righteousness for us.<\/p>\n
3) Eph. 4:24–we put on righteousness when we put on the new man.<\/p>\n
4) Galatians 2:27; Romans 6:3-11–We put on the new man when we are baptized into Christ.<\/p>\n
III. Man needs a savior that can mediate before God on behalf of man.<\/p>\n
1. One who can bridge the gap between God and man.<\/p>\n

2) John 1:1, 14<\/p>\n
2. One who can represent the justice of God to man–Jesus does this.<\/p>\n

3. One who can represent the frailties of man to God–Jesus does this.<\/p>\n

4. One who can approach God.<\/p>\n

5. One who can bear the sins of man.<\/p>\n

6. One who can offer the sacrifice for sin that man could never offer.<\/p>\n

1. We have looked at the need for a savior.<\/p>\n
