Read: Hebrews 8:13

2. About the Text:

1) Hebrews 8:13 points out that there is both a New and an Old Covenant.

2) We’ve been studying the book of Hebrews in Bible class.

3) We’ve all become familiar with the purpose of the book.

4) It is out of this purpose that we see a diligent comparison between the Old and New Covenants.

5) There are many comparisons made in the book of Hebrews.

6) We won’t explore all of them in this lesson.

7) Instead, we will look at some foundational comparisons.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: Between the Old Covenant and the New, there is a difference of…

I. The Scope of People

1. The Old Covenant was for the nation of Israel alone.

1) Exodus 34:27, 28

2) Deuteronomy 5:1-3

3) Ephesians 2:11, 12

2. The New Covenant is for all the world, all nations.

1) Matthew 28:18-20

2) Mark 16:15-20

3) Acts 2:39

II. Their Relationship to the Cross

1. The Old was nailed to the cross-it ended.

1) Jesus intention was to end it – Matthew 5:17, 18

2) Colossians 2:14

3) Ephesians 2:14-19

4) Hebrews 7:18

2. The New was inaugurated at the cross-it began.

1) This new covenant was promised-Jeremiah 31:31-34

2) Jesus said what would make it valid-Matthew 26:28

3) Hebrews tells us when it became valid-Hebrews 9:14-17

III. Purpose

1. The purpose of the Old was to condemn sin and bring us to Christ.

1) Brought a knowledge of sin

a. Romans 3:20

b. Romans 7:7-13

2) Was to bring us to Christ – Galatians 3:24, 25

2. The purpose of the New is to provide for salvation based upon Christ.

1) Acts 13:38, 39

2) John 1:17

CONCLUSION:

1. The Bible teaches that there is a fundamental difference between the Old and the New Covenants. There is a difference of…

1) The Scope of People

2) Their Relationship to the Cross.

3) Their Purpose

2. Do we believe in the Ten Commandments?

1) Yes, inasmuch as they are reiterated under the authority of Jesus.

2) No, in that we don’t go to Moses for our authority in religion today, we go to Jesus.

3. Invitation

1) If you are a Christian…

a. The New Covenant is the better covenant.

b. Those who spurn it will know God’s justice one day.

2) If you are not a Christian this morning…

a. Acknowledge the authority of Christ’s covenant over your life now.

b. Become a citizen of God’s kingdom today.

a) Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing…”

b) Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible….”

c) Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30).

d) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matt. 16:16).

e) Be Baptized for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:15,16).

Sermon on Covenants Date written: October 23rd, 2004 Scripture ref: Hebrews 8:13 SUBJECT: Covenants TITLE: Differences Between The Old Covenant and The New PROPOSITION: Between the Old Covenant and the New, there is a difference of 1) Scope of People, 2) Their Relationship to the Cross, 3) Purpose OBJECTIVES: Each person should be able discuss … Continue reading “Sermon on Covenants – Differences Between The Old Covenant and The New – Bible Outlines”

[1

post-43332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sermons
["GET
