Ordaining Elders in the Church<\/strong>. Sermon outline by Tom Moore giving God’s counsel on ordaining elders in every city.<\/p>\n

INTRODUCTION:<\/p>\n

A. God has set forth a pattern for His church.<\/p>\n

1. A pattern for:<\/p>\n

a. Worship<\/p>\n

b. Entrance into the Church<\/p>\n

c. Organization<\/p>\n

2. Hebrews 8:5<\/p>\n

3. I am pleased that the church here wants to be scripturally organized, and do Bible things in Bible ways<\/p>\n

B. Ordaining elders is one of the most trying times in the life of a congregation “ it can be the making or the breaking of a congregation.<\/p>\n

1. I felt the process used in coming up with more elders was biblical and proper.<\/p>\n

2. I’ve been pleased with the overall participation and attitude of the congregations in this process<\/p>\n

3. Remember, that it is not the majority or minority that dictated what was done it was the word of God.<\/p>\n

4. Two men have come forth as being qualified and desiring the office Bill Dorries and Jim Griffith<\/p>\n

C. There is nothing specifically said in the Bible about how elders are to be ordained<\/p>\n

1. We are given a hint of something in Titus 1:5<\/p>\n

a. There is some process involved<\/p>\n

b. Titus, a gospel preacher, was involved in the process<\/p>\n

2. Therefore, as an act of ordaining elders in the church, I want to give some final words of advise and encouragement.<\/p>\n

3. I want to give words of advise to:<\/p>\n

a. The elders’ children<\/p>\n

b. The elders’ wives<\/p>\n

c. The congregation<\/p>\n

d. The elders<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION:[ discussion of this sermon on ordaining elders in the church ]<\/p>\n

A. A WORD TO THE ELDERS’ CHILDREN<\/h2>\n

1. Your father, as an elder, will need your help.<\/p>\n

2. How can you help?<\/p>\n

a. Be obedient<\/p>\n

1) To your heavenly Father (Acts 5:29)<\/p>\n

2) To your earthly father (Eph. 6:1)<\/p>\n

3) Disobedience can:<\/p>\n

a) Disqualify him<\/p>\n

b) Damage his influence<\/p>\n

c) Hinder the Lord’s work<\/p>\n

b. Be an encouragement<\/p>\n

1) Show your appreciation (proud, etc.)<\/p>\n

2) Affection<\/p>\n

3) Understanding (the Lord comes first)<\/p>\n

3. A word of warning<\/p>\n

a. You will now be living in a fish bowl<\/p>\n

b. Many will judge you more critically<\/p>\n

c. But, the blessing will outweigh the burdens if you keep the proper attitude<\/p>\n

B. A WORD TO THE ELDERS’ WIVES<\/h2>\n

1. Set a good example<\/p>\n

a. An elder’s wife has no authority in the church, but she can have a positive influence upon:<\/p>\n

1) Her husband<\/p>\n

2) Her children<\/p>\n

3) Other elders’ wives<\/p>\n

4) The congregation<\/p>\n

b. A poor example can destroy your husband’s influence<\/p>\n

c. An elder’s wife can make or break him<\/p>\n

d. Behind every great man there is usually always a great woman<\/p>\n

e. 1 Timothy 3:11<\/p>\n

2. An elder’s wife must be willing to bear the burdens along with her husband:<\/p>\n

a. Sleepless nights<\/p>\n

b. Shedding a tear by his side<\/p>\n

c. Be patient<\/p>\n

d. Be encouraging<\/p>\n

3. Warning “ you too will find yourself in a fishbowl.<\/p>\n

C. A WORD TO THE CONGREGATION<\/h2>\n

1. Give them a chance<\/p>\n

a. They will make mistakes … so “off with their heads” some will say<\/p>\n

b. They will have to learn to work with each other and the other elders<\/p>\n

2. Don’t try to “cripple” them with bad attitudes right at the beginning of their new work.<\/p>\n

a. Be longsuffering<\/p>\n

b. Give them time<\/p>\n

c. Be understanding<\/p>\n

3. Encourage them<\/p>\n

a. Tell them you are behind them<\/p>\n

b. Encourage them in front of others<\/p>\n

c. Express your gratitude for their willingness to undertake this important work<\/p>\n

d. 1 Peter 5:1<\/p>\n

4. Don’t receive an accusation against them<\/p>\n

a. 1 Timothy 5:19<\/p>\n

b. Always follow the pattern of Matthew 18:15-17<\/p>\n

D. A WORD TO THE ELDERS<\/h2>\n

1. Set the right example<\/p>\n

a. Speech<\/p>\n

b. Conduct<\/p>\n

c. Dress<\/p>\n

d. Attitude<\/p>\n

2. Expect difficulties<\/p>\n

a. There will be complaining<\/p>\n

b. There will be difficulties of sin<\/p>\n

3. Do not allow any of the members to form factions surrounding any of you<\/p>\n

4. Be longsuffering toward each other, and the other elders, when differences of opinion arise.<\/p>\n

a. Keep these differences behind closed doors<\/p>\n

b. Only the elders should know<\/p>\n

5. Stick together “ a divided eldership will cause a divided church<\/p>\n

6. Be alert to false teaching<\/p>\n

a. Never stay in the dark …<\/p>\n

b. Meet with the teachers … discussion is in order …<\/p>\n

7. Always put the church first<\/p>\n

a. Above self<\/p>\n

b. Above majority opinion<\/p>\n

c. Above family<\/p>\n

8. Encourage the members in good works<\/p>\n

9. Do not lord it over the flock (1 Pet. 5:3)<\/p>\n

a. Treat them as you would want to be treated<\/p>\n

b. Be gentle<\/p>\n

c. Be understanding<\/p>\n

10. Know the flock<\/p>\n

CONCLUSION: [ close of this sermon on ordaining elders in the church ]<\/p>\n

A. Have them stand<\/p>\n

B. Tell them, “You have agreed to take on this great work, with all its responsibilities, and to do things in a Scriptural manner. The church here has agreed to follow you as their elders, and understand your God-given authority.”<\/p>\n

C. “You are ordained by the Lord to be elders in the congregation here.”<\/p>\n

D. Prayer in their behalf<\/p>\n
