Sermon on Daniel<\/h2>\n

Scripture ref: Daniel 1:8-16<\/p>\n

SUBJECT: Biography<\/p>\n

TITLE: Lessons from the Life of Daniel<\/p>\n

PROPOSITION: Daniel is a great example of 1) obedience, 2) wisdom, 3) prayer.<\/p>\n

OBJECTIVES: Each hearer should be able to relate three stories from Daniel that teach these lessons.<\/p>\n

AIM: To instruct and encourage by studying lessons from the life of Daniel.<\/p>\n

INTRODUCTION:<\/p>\n

1. Read: Daniel 1:8-16<\/p>\n

2. About the Text:<\/p>\n

1) Daniel was taken into Babylonian captivity around 606 B.C.<\/p>\n

2) He was a young man at the time. Vs. 17 calls him and his friends, children.<\/p>\n

3) He was likely made to be a eunuch since he reported to the chief of the eunuchs.<\/p>\n

4) Daniel was in a strange land, having strange things done to him, under a strange king, who surrounded himself with strange gods.<\/p>\n

5) He provides for us a wonderful example of one who desired to have a right relationship with God.<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION: Daniel Gives us a Great Example of . . .<\/p>\n

I.   Obedience<\/p>\n

1. We read how Daniel would not defile himself with the king’s meat and wine.<\/p>\n

1) Evidently the king wanted Daniel to eat things that were prohibited in the Jewish diet.<\/p>\n

2) It would have been easy for Daniel to just do what he was told.<\/p>\n

3) After all, he was a slave in a foreign country.<\/p>\n

4) Why should he worry about obeying God?<\/p>\n

5) Surely God would understand his situation.<\/p>\n

6) But the text says, “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself” (Dan.1:8).<\/p>\n

2. How about us today?<\/p>\n

1) What happens when we come across a situation where man challenges what God has told us to do?<\/p>\n

2) What do we do when our buddies gets angry and upset because we choose to go to worship instead of participating in recreational activities with them on Sunday?<\/p>\n

3) Do we try to find excuses to go with them?<\/p>\n

4) Or do we obey God? (Matthew 6:33)<\/p>\n

5) Daniel was a slave in a foreign land, but he found a way to obey God.<\/p>\n

6) Today, we are not slaves of another country, we are free.<\/p>\n

7) Do we value that freedom?<\/p>\n

8) If we do, then let us make the right choices and always put God first.<\/p>\n

9) Hebrews 5:9-Jesus saves those who obey Him.<\/p>\n

II.  Wisdom<\/p>\n

1. Summarize Daniel 2 – We read how Daniel used wisdom to save himself and his friends from death.<\/p>\n

1) King has a dream.<\/p>\n

2) Death is threatened to those who cannot tell it.<\/p>\n

3) Daniel asks for time.<\/p>\n

4) Daniel prays.<\/p>\n

5) God gives the dream and interpretation.<\/p>\n

6) Daniel tells this to the king.<\/p>\n

7) He and his friends are spared and Daniel is promoted to the king’s service.<\/p>\n

2. How about us today?<\/p>\n

1) When we encounter a difficult situation, how do we handle it?<\/p>\n

2) Many people today would cry out that their “rights” have been violated.<\/p>\n

3) Many would get angry and respond violently.<\/p>\n

4) Many would simply ignore the problem and leave.<\/p>\n

5) Daniel didn’t have those luxuries.<\/p>\n

6) Daniel placed his cares and concerns in the hands of the One who could provide relief.<\/p>\n

7) When we need wisdom, we should ask. James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…”<\/p>\n

8) 1 Peter 5:9 says “casting all of your care upon Him because he cares for you.”<\/p>\n

9) Phil.4:6 “In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”<\/p>\n

III. Prayer<\/p>\n

1. Daniel 6 – How Daniels enemies conspired against him to have him killed.<\/p>\n

1) Daniel was promoted over all the governors and satraps under Darius.<\/p>\n

2) They wanted him out, but they could not find any fault in him.<\/p>\n

3) So they devised a way to get him executed by getting the king to sign a law saying that no one could pray for 30 days except to the king. If they did, they were to be case into a den of lions.<\/p>\n

4) After this was passed, Daniel went home, opened his windows, and prayed to God.<\/p>\n

5) His enemies saw him and reported him to the king.<\/p>\n

6) The king did not want to deliver Daniel to the lion’s den.<\/p>\n

7) But the law was unchangeable under Medopersian rule.<\/p>\n

8) So Daniel was cast into the lion’s den.<\/p>\n

9) The king fasted and prayed that evening.<\/p>\n

10) He rose up early in the morning.<\/p>\n

11) He called out for Daniel.<\/p>\n

12) Read Daniel 6:22, 23.<\/p>\n

2. How about us today?<\/p>\n

1) We have great freedom in our country and society.<\/p>\n

2) We have tremendous blessings at our disposal.<\/p>\n

3) The likelihood is that we will never be cast into a lion’s den for praying.<\/p>\n

4) Do we pray?<\/p>\n

5) We do no crime against God or against man when we pray.<\/p>\n

6) 1 Thess.5:17 “Pray without ceasing.”<\/p>\n

7) Eph.6:18 “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”.<\/p>\n

CONCLUSION:<\/p>\n

1. Let’s learn from Daniel.<\/p>\n

1) Obedience<\/p>\n

2) Wisdom<\/p>\n

3) Prayer<\/p>\n

2. Invitation<\/p>\n

1) If you are a Christian…<\/p>\n

a. Do you need wisdom?<\/p>\n

b. How is your prayer life?<\/p>\n

2) If you are not a Christian . . .<\/p>\n

a. You need to obey.<\/p>\n

b. Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing . . .”<\/p>\n

c. Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible . . . .”<\/p>\n

d. Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30).<\/p>\n

e. Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matt.16:16).<\/p>\n

f. Be Baptized for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:15,16).<\/p>\n
