PROPOSITION:: To present a sermon outline on faith<\/strong> to teach the Bible’s definition of faith in opposition to the denominational world’s.<\/p>\n

INTRODUCTION: [ Beginning of this sermon outline on faith. ]<\/p>\n

A. In our present day, faith is widely misunderstood.<\/p>\n

1. The nature and crucial importance of faith has eluded many in the religious world.<\/p>\n

2. Most of the world limit faith to being mere belief, but the Bible has a much deeper meaning placed on this important biblical term<\/p>\n

B. As we begin to delve into the doctrine of faith, by way of introduction notice that:<\/p>\n

1. The gospel is “the faith” – Jude 3, and those who have obeyed it have been “faithful to the Lord” (Acts 16:15)<\/p>\n

2. Notice, Acts 2:44 and Galatians 6:10, thus, collectively, “believers” are “the household of faith”<\/p>\n

3. “Faith” is the underlying principle of all the Christian’s conduct … – Galatians 2:20<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION: In this sermon outline on faith let us discuss:<\/h2>\n

A. THE MEANING OF IT<\/p>\n

1. Definitions<\/p>\n

a. There are three basic ideas relevant to the meaning of faith:<\/p>\n

1) Belief, certainty, or conviction of the truth of a proposition<\/p>\n

2) Secondly, there is the confidence in a person’s trustworthiness or in the person himself. This involves the idea that the object of faith can be counted on to provide what is needed “a man of faith” is one who trusts God<\/p>\n

3) Thirdly, another basic meaning of faith is fidelity to a trust or commitment. This involves the idea that the subject of faith can be counted on to do his duty “a faithful man” is one who can be trusted by God<\/p>\n

b. The usage of pistis (faith) and pistos (faithful) in the New Testament reflects all three concepts<\/p>\n

1) Belief<\/p>\n

a) Acts 8:12<\/p>\n

b) Romans 10:17<\/p>\n

2) Confidence<\/p>\n

a) James 1:6<\/p>\n

b) Romans 4:3, 18-22<\/p>\n

3) Fidelity<\/p>\n

a) 1 Corinthians 4:2<\/p>\n

b) Revelation 2:10<\/p>\n

2. Significance<\/p>\n

a. These three components of faith are progressive:<\/p>\n

1) Belief (intellectual credence) is the important beginning point – Hebrews 11:1, 6<\/p>\n

2) This grows into confidence (self-surrendering reliance) – Philippians 4:10-13<\/p>\n

3) This grows into fidelity (unswerving loyalty) – 2 Timothy 4:7-8<\/p>\n

b. Each is based upon solid evidence concerning the character of God Himself<\/p>\n

1) God has demonstrated His credibility – Titus 1:1-3<\/p>\n

2) God has demonstrated His dependability – Romans 8:31-32<\/p>\n

3) God has demonstrated His worthiness of allegiance – 2 Timothy 1:8-12<\/p>\n

c. We can have faith in God and be faithful to Him because He is a faithful God – 2 Thessalonians 3:3<\/p>\n

B. FAITH AS A WAY OF LIFE<\/p>\n

1. Confessing Faith – Matthew 10:32-33<\/p>\n

a. Is continually confessed<\/p>\n

b. Perversions must be avoided<\/p>\n

1) Counterfeit – Matthew 7:15<\/p>\n

2) Faith in self – Proverbs 16:25<\/p>\n

3) Self-righteous – Luke 18:9<\/p>\n

4) Partial – 2 Chronicles 25:2<\/p>\n

5) Skeptical – James 1:6<\/p>\n

c. Making the “good confession” (1 Tim. 6:12) implies commitment<\/p>\n

1) It is a bone fide pledge of faith<\/p>\n

2) Our confession must be held fast – Hebrews 10:23<\/p>\n

2. Living By Faith<\/p>\n

a. To be “in the faith” (2 Cor. 13:5) is also to be “of the faith” (Gal. 3:9) – thus, faith is a real factor in the Christian’s manner of life<\/p>\n

b. Life in Christ is the life of trusting reliance on God. We need to realize that faith in God if closely related to love for God – 1 Thessalonians 1:3<\/p>\n

c. A person of faith renounces any other means of “security” such as:<\/p>\n

1) The flesh – Philippians 3:3-11<\/p>\n

2) Self – 2 Corinthians 1:9<\/p>\n

3) Temporal prosperity – 1 Timothy 6:17<\/p>\n

d. You see, a man of faith relies totally on God – Psalm 40:4<\/p>\n

e. Life in Christ is the life of trusting obedience to God<\/p>\n

1) Abraham is a good example of trusting obedience – Hebrews 11:8<\/p>\n

2) Psalm 143:8<\/p>\n

3. Benefiting From Faith – Romans 15:13<\/p>\n

a. Joy and peace come not from the absence of conflict in life, but from faith’s ability to cope with it<\/p>\n

b. Also, faith imparts more active benefits:<\/p>\n

1) Diligence in work – 1 Thessalonians 1:3<\/p>\n

2) Willingness to sacrifice – Hebrew 11:24-26<\/p>\n

3) Strength and courage -Ephesians 6:16<\/p>\n

4) Boldness and confidence -Ephesians 3:12<\/p>\n

4. Maintaining Faith – Revelation 2:10<\/p>\n

a. It is not enough to have had faith at one time the life of faith begun is virtually worthless if it is not completed<\/p>\n

1) Colossians 2:5<\/p>\n

2) Hebrews 6:12<\/p>\n

b. What happens to one’s faith is crucial:<\/p>\n

1) Growth – Luke 17:5<\/p>\n

2) Testing – James 1:2-3<\/p>\n

3) Adding to – 2 Peter 1:5-11<\/p>\n

4) Standing fast – 1 Corinthians 15:1-2<\/p>\n

c. Faith is essentially forward-looking – Hebrews 3:6, 14<\/p>\n

CONCLUSION: In this sermon outline on faith<\/em> we have seen<\/p>\n

A. Man’s basic decision is whether to trust his Maker of not<\/p>\n

1. Jeremiah 2:13<\/p>\n

2. Jeremiah 17:5-8<\/p>\n

B. The Christian’s life of faith will not be disappointed<\/p>\n

1. Philippians 4:13<\/p>\n

2. 1 Peter 2:6<\/p>\n
