Like few other parables, with this one we are informed of the purpose.

2. Read: Luke 18:1-8.

3. Regarding the text:

1) Jesus is talking about prayer.

2) We should especially be interested in prayer for strength from God to do his will.

3) Jesus brings up an interesting point here as he declares that God will provide (as it is according to his will, James 4:3, ask with correct motive) if we continually keep on asking.

4) This parable has also been called the “Parable of the Importunate Widow” because she importuned this judge until he did what she asked. She bugged him.

4. Reference to S.T.P.O.

DISCUSSION: In this scripture we have –

I. The objective of the parable, 18:1. (1 Thessalonians 5:17; James 1:5)

II. The parable, 18:2-5.

1. The Judge.

2. The widow.

3. The problem:

1) Widow’s view;

2) Judge’s.

III. The conclusion in a contrast, 18:6-8.

1. Notice the words of the unrighteous judge.

2. God’s attitude in contrast.

3. Will THE FAITH be on earth when the Lord return

1) Destruction of Jerusalem.

2) The end of the world.

a. The world in Noah’s day.

b. Sodom and Gomorrah,

c. Israel,

d. Edom – Rock City of Petra – Obadiah.

e. Nineveh – Jonah and Nahum.

f. Babylon – Jeremiah 50.

g. Many others were destroyed when they became too wicked to exist.

3) In this section, Jesus is not concerned about personal faith, but about THE FAITH!

a. Many believed in gods or a god while Jesus was on the earth and had done so from early history,

b. Jesus did NOT come to make people religious,

c. Jesus is concerned about THE FAITH (Jude 3; Acts 6:7; Galatians 3:26-27).

d. Acts 20:28; Jesus church is the ONLY one with THE FAITH.

4. Consider the contrast in this passage:

1) The Good God vs. the unjust judge. Will God avenge? Revelation 6:9-10; Romans 12:19; Hebrews 10:30-31.

2) The importunate widow vs. contemporary Christians.

3) Christianity vs. paganism.

4) Christianity vs. denominationalism.

CONCLUSION:

1. In this scripture we see:

1) The objective of the parable;

2) The parable; and

3) The conclusion in contrast.

2. Let us, in light of these truths,

1) Pray earnestly and continually to God; and

2) Support THE FAITH and it alone.

SUBJECT: Parables TITLE: The Widow and the Unjust Judge PROPOSITION: To set forth an exposition of the parable Jesus told of “the widow and the unjust judge.” OBJECTIVE: To encourage us to pray to God, with importunity, and never faint.
