An innocent man allowed Himself to be put to death.

3. That event and subsequent resurrection raises questions that demand answers.

Discussion: What happened when Jesus died on the cross?

I. What was the Motivation?

1. The Love of God for sinners, John 3:16.

2. While we were still sinners, Rom. 5:8; Isa. 59:1-2; Rom. 6:23.

3. The kindness of God, Tit. 3:4.

4. The kind of love that takes action, 1 John 4:9-10, 19.

II. What was the Purpose?

1. That we might be reconciled to God, 2 Cor. 5:19-21; Luke 19:10; Isa. 53:5.

2. To be the propitiation for our sins, Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2; 4:10; Heb. 9:5 (mercy seat same in Greek as propitiation); Exod. 25:17; Lev. 16:15; v. 30 (LXX rendering of mercy seat same as previous NT examples).
Jesus, as propitiation was sacrifice, priest, and place of atonement.

3. To be our example, Heb. 5:8-9; John 15:13; 1 Pet. 2:21-25.

4. Reconciliation of Jew and Gentile, Eph. 2:14-16; Gal. 3:27-28.

III. What Is Our Response?

1. Fear and Trembling, Awe and Respect, Phil. 2:5-12.

2. Drawn to Christ, Heb. 12:1-3.

3. Take up cross, follow Him, Luke 9:23; Gal. 2:20.

4. Obedience unto salvation, Mark 16:16.

Conclusion: What happened when Jesus died on the cross?

1. Out of love and kindness Jesus came and died for us.

2. He did this to atone for our sins and reconcile us to God.

3. How will you respond?
