INTRODUCTION:<\/p>\n
1. Read: Habakkuk 2:15. Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!<\/p>\n
2. Regarding the text:<\/p>\n
1) This was in the time of the first deportation of Judah to Babylon.<\/p>\n
2) In a remarkable display of trust and obedience, Abraham left the area which became Babylon.<\/p>\n
3) In an equal but opposite display of disobedience, Judah was taken back to Babylon.<\/p>\n
4) Habakkuk 2:15 is one reason.<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION: In this passage we have –<\/p>\n
I. WOE.<\/p>\n
1. Many woes pronounced in the Bible.<\/p>\n
2. Jesus pronounced “Woe” upon:<\/p>\n
1) Matthew 11:21.<\/p>\n
2) Matthew 23:13-36.<\/p>\n
3) Matthew 26:24.<\/p>\n
4) Luke 11:45-52.<\/p>\n
5) Luke 6:26.<\/p>\n
3. This woe is limited to the one who:<\/p>\n
1) Giveth his neighbor drink;<\/p>\n
2) Puttest thy bottle to him; and<\/p>\n
3) Makest him drunken also.<\/p>\n
4. Notice the word “Also.”<\/p>\n
5. Consider: John 2:1-11 – six water-pots of two or three firkins each = as much as 150.5 gallons. NOTE: Jews always used “sweet” wine at weddings, cf. Fiddler On The Roof; “Sunrise, Sunset.”<\/p>\n
II. WHET.<\/p>\n
1. Remember the word “also”?<\/p>\n
2. It was not only the making one drunk that was forbidden.<\/p>\n
3. One has to learn to like alcoholic beverages because the poison, C2H6O, Ethyl Alcohol, burns the mouth and sours the stomach, the reason vomiting accompanies its use.<\/p>\n
4. This one is trying to develop a “taste” in the receiver.<\/p>\n
III. WHELM.<\/p>\n
1. Yea, this is designed to “overwhelm” the partaker.<\/p>\n
2. Drunkenness is always and ONLY a matter of degrees.<\/p>\n
3. The first faculty of man affected by alcohol is his ability to make moral judgments. Cf. brewers hypocrisy saying, “Know when to say when.”<\/p>\n
IV. WHOREDOM.<\/p>\n
1. How many times has alcohol been used to destroy the morals of some young person so that fornication could be foisted on him or her?<\/p>\n
2. The same expression used in Genesis 9:22.<\/p>\n
CONCLUSION:<\/p>\n
1. In Habakkuk 2:15 we have:<\/p>\n
1) WOE;<\/p>\n
2) WHET;<\/p>\n
3) WHELM; and<\/p>\n
4) WHOREDOM.<\/p>\n
