PROPOSITION: To answer the three most common questions about the church of Christ.<\/p>\n
OBJECTIVES: Each listener should be able to understand the answer to the three most common questions regarding the church of Christ.<\/p>\n
AIM: I want to answer the most commonly asked questions both for the edification of our visitors and our members.<\/p>\n
INTRODUCTION:<\/p>\n
1. Read: Romans 16:16<\/p>\n
2. About the Text:<\/p>\n
1) In this text, we read about churches of Christ within the Bible.<\/p>\n
2) All the churches that Paul had worked with sent greetings to the church in Rome.<\/p>\n
3) In so doing, they were acknowledging one another.<\/p>\n
4) That is what I would like to do this morning, acknowledge you.<\/p>\n
5) Particularly, I want to acknowledge you by answering some of your questions regarding the churches of Christ.<\/p>\n
6) I will not be able to answer every question.<\/p>\n
7) However, there are some questions asked more than others regarding churches of Christ.<\/p>\n
8) Let’s talk about these questions today.<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION:<\/p>\n
I. Why does the church of Christ not use instrumental music?<\/p>\n
1. This is perhaps the most frequently asked question.<\/p>\n
2. It is not because we don’t like, can’t afford, or can’t play.<\/p>\n
3. The Bible simply tells us that we must sing to worship God and nothing more.<\/p>\n
4. Colossians 3:16<\/p>\n
5. Ephesians 5:19<\/p>\n
6. Doesn’t say not to?<\/p>\n
a. Noah<\/p>\n
b. Nadab and Abihu<\/p>\n
c. Colossians 3:17<\/p>\n
II. Are the churches of Christ the only ones going to heaven?<\/p>\n
1. This is probably the biggest misunderstanding regarding what the bible teaches.<\/p>\n
2. Many think that we are just another denomination and so think regarding this statement.<\/p>\n
3. The phrase “church of Christ” does not refer to a denomination.<\/p>\n
4. Matthew 16:18 Jesus said, “I will build my church.”<\/p>\n
5. Acts 20:28 says that Jesus died for the church.<\/p>\n
6. Ephesians 5:25 says that Jesus is the savior of the church.<\/p>\n
7. Whose church did Jesus build?<\/p>\n
8. For whose church did Jesus die?<\/p>\n
9. For whose church is Jesus the savior?<\/p>\n
10.So, yes, in this sense, the church of Christ are the only ones going to heaven.<\/p>\n
11.The more significant and important question to ask is this, “Who is the church of Christ?”<\/p>\n
III. Isn’t teaching that baptism is necessary for salvation teaching that your own works save you?<\/p>\n
1. Let’s talk about the assumption in this question first–Baptism is necessary for salvation.<\/p>\n
2. Is this something that members of the church of Christ just made up or something from the Bible?<\/p>\n
a. Mark 16:16<\/p>\n
b. Acts 2:38<\/p>\n
c. Acts 22:16<\/p>\n
d. Romans 6:1-11<\/p>\n
e. 1 Peter 3:21<\/p>\n
3. Now that we understand that the Bible teaches that baptism is necessary for salvation, how does this fit in with the question?<\/p>\n
a. Our own works of righteousness do not save us.<\/p>\n
a) Ephesians 2:4, 8, 9<\/p>\n
b) Titus 3:5<\/p>\n
c) Luke 17:10<\/p>\n
b. But when we do works of obedience, that is not our own righteousness, it is God’s.<\/p>\n
a) Hebrews 5:8-9<\/p>\n
b) James 2:14-26<\/p>\n
