Introduction: John 8:1-11<\/p>\n
1. The Jewish leaders felt that Jesus was vulnerable regarding the finer points of the law. He was “unlearned.”<\/p>\n
2. So they tried to make Him stumble at a point where Jewish law and Roman law clashed, i.e., capital punishment.<\/p>\n
3. They didn’t count on Jesus knowing the law better than they did.<\/p>\n
DISCUSSION:<\/p>\n
I. The Accused<\/p>\n
1. Taken in the very act of adultery.<\/p>\n
2. Lev. 20:10; Deut. 22:22.<\/p>\n
3. Glaring that the adulterous man wasn’t there. Was he a gentile? A Roman? Perhaps this is the reason Jesus didn’t mention it.<\/p>\n
II. The Problem<\/p>\n
1. Only one may cast the first stone according to the law. Deut. 17:5-7; Deut. 13:9.<\/p>\n
2. The first one who cast a stone identified himself as a witness. If he wasn’t, he would be guilty. Deut. 19:15-20.<\/p>\n
3. Apparently the witnesses weren’t available, or there weren’t sufficient witnesses.<\/p>\n
III. The Conclusion<\/p>\n
1. No stones were cast.<\/p>\n
2. No condemnation from Jesus though He truly was a witness (He told her to sin no more.).<\/p>\n
3. Jesus is shown to be the Master of the Law.<\/p>\n
4. Qualified to judge, 2 Tim. 4:1, 8.<\/p>\n
Conclusion:<\/p>\n
1. You can count on Jesus judging your case righteously at the final judgment.<\/p>\n
1) This might cause fear. If so, repent.<\/p>\n
2) This might cause comfort. If so, rejoice.<\/p>\n
2. Obey Christ and remove the fear.<\/p>\n
