TITLE: WHY REVELATION WAS GIVEN<\/p>\n
PROPOSITION: To study the four reasons for the giving of the word of God, the revelation, to the Ephesians as set forth in Ephesians 1:18-19.<\/p>\n
OBJECTIVE:That we understand the application of these 4 reasons.<\/p>\n
INTRODUCTION:<\/p>\n
1. Read: Ephesians 1:18-19.<\/p>\n
2. Regarding the text:<\/p>\n
1) Context – Ephesians 1:15-23.<\/p>\n
2) Inspiration states that this letter is a revelation to the Ephesians.<\/p>\n
3) Four reasons are then given for this revelation:<\/p>\n
a. That the eyes of your hearts may be enlightened;<\/p>\n
b. That you may know the hope of your calling;<\/p>\n
c. That you may know the riches of your inheritance; and<\/p>\n
d. That you may know the exceeding greatness of God’s power to the Christian.<\/p>\n
4) Then, in Ephesians 1:20-23, Inspiration describes how God’s power raised Christ from the dead and made Christ ruler over all things.<\/p>\n
3. Reference to Subject, Title, Proposition and Objective.<\/p>\n
DISCUSSION; The revelation was given so that –<\/p>\n
I. Our eyes, our heart eyes, would be enlightened.<\/p>\n
1. This is reference to the knowledge of God.<\/p>\n
2. Jesus often talked about light.<\/p>\n
1) Matthew 5:14.<\/p>\n
2) Matthew 6:22-23.<\/p>\n
3) 1 John 1:6-7.<\/p>\n
3. God has always been concerned that we have CORRECT knowledge.<\/p>\n
4. Many people are led off into spiritualism and experimental religion – in place of Divine revelation, this is idolatry.<\/p>\n
II. We may know the hope of our calling.<\/p>\n
1. Hope is: DESIRE plus EXPECTATION.<\/p>\n
2. Romans 8:24.<\/p>\n
3. Hebrews 10:23.<\/p>\n
4. But this is the hope of our calling:<\/p>\n
1) Ephesians 4:4-6;<\/p>\n
2) Hope is in the one faith;<\/p>\n
3) Roman 10:17;<\/p>\n
4) How called, Romans 1:16; 2 Thessalonians 2:14.<\/p>\n
5. Romans 5:4.<\/p>\n
6. Hebrews 6:18-19.<\/p>\n
III. We may know the RICHES of our inheritance.<\/p>\n
1. Inheritance is predestined, Ephesians 1:11.<\/p>\n
2. Earnest, Ephesians 1:13-14; 2 Corinthians 5:5.<\/p>\n
3. Acts 20:32.<\/p>\n
4. Only by will, and can be lost.<\/p>\n
IV. We may know the exceeding greatness of God’s power to Christians.<\/p>\n
1. Romans 1:16.<\/p>\n
2. Ephesians 3:20-21.<\/p>\n
3. Romans 15:13.<\/p>\n
4. Some deny this power, 2 Timothy 3:5.<\/p>\n
5. Philippians 4:13.<\/p>\n
CONCLUSION:<\/p>\n
1. The four reasons for Inspiration revealing God’s word are that:<\/p>\n
1) The eyes of our hearts be enlightened;<\/p>\n
2) We know the hope of our calling;<\/p>\n
3) We know the riches of our inheritance; and<\/p>\n
4) We know the exceeding greatness of God’s power to the Christian.<\/p>\n
