PROPOSITION: To teach the folly of walking in the lies our fathers believed.<\/p>\n
OBJECTIVE: To motivate the hearer to reject the lies our fathers believed and to walk in truth.<\/p>\n
INTRODUCTION: Read Amos 2:4<\/p>\n
1. One of Satan’s many devices is to cause his lies to become traditions of men.<\/p>\n
2. At the time Amos wrote Judah had been in their errors for generations.<\/p>\n
3. There was a barrier to Judah’s repentance, namely, tradition.<\/p>\n
4. NRS “but they have been led astray by the same lies after which their ancestors walked.”<\/p>\n
5. Upon hearing God’s prophets many in Judah would have said, “Our fathers worshipped in the high places. You can’t convince me my father is going to hell. Therefore, I will continue to worship in the high places.”<\/p>\n
6. God says that punishment is due to those that walk in the lies the fathers walked in.<\/p>\n
7. Why should we reject the lies our fathers believed and obeyed?<\/p>\n
DISCUSSION: The lies our fathers believed should be rejected because:<\/p>\n
I. OUR FATHERS DESIRE IT.<\/p>\n
1. Because they have been confronted with the truth.<\/p>\n
1) John 12:48 Judgment is by the word of Christ, not the think-sos of the fathers.<\/p>\n
2) The rich man was confronted with the truth. Luke 16:19ff, esp. v.28.<\/p>\n
2. Because they love their children. Matthew 7:9-11<\/p>\n
3. Face the fact. If your father believed and lived a lie He is in torments, his sins unforgiven. His only comforting thought is that perhaps you won’t make the same mistake.<\/p>\n
4. A Good Father…<\/p>\n
1) sees the pit and steers you away.<\/p>\n
2) knows fire burns and protects you.<\/p>\n
3) Knows the folly of stealing and lying and applies the rod of correction.<\/p>\n
4) wants to keep you from the shame of collectors calls and teaches you to pay your bills.<\/p>\n
5) who is now fully aware of his own folly NOW desires that you avoid it completely.<\/p>\n
5. TO REJECT THIS IS TO REJECT THE LOVE OF A FATHER AND TO DISHONOR HIM.<\/p>\n
II. JUDGMENT IS COMING. Amos 2:4; Rev. 22:14-15. Because judgment is coming…<\/p>\n
1. Repent, believe and obey the truth. Acts 17:30-31<\/p>\n
2. Continue in the truth. Romans 11:22<\/p>\n
3. Persuade others of the truth. 2 Corinthians 5:11<\/p>\n
4. Love the truth. 2 Thessalonians 2:10. “They refused to love the truth and so be saved.” ESV<\/p>\n
III. BECAUSE OF EXCEEDING GREAT REWARD. Rev. 21:1-7. When we cast off the lies that our fathers believed we gain…<\/p>\n
1. Freedom from sin. John 8:32; Romans 6:17,18,22<\/p>\n
2. A pure soul. 1 Peter 1:22.<\/p>\n
3. Sanctification. John 17:17<\/p>\n
4. Salvation. James 1:21. (Remember John 17:17 “thy word is truth.”)<\/p>\n
CONCLUSION: Why should we reject the lies our fathers believed?<\/p>\n
1. Our fathers desire it.<\/p>\n
2. Judgment is coming.<\/p>\n
