Read: Matthew 13:44.

2. Regarding the text:

1) In Jesus’ Galilean Ministry.

2) It is one of a series of parables all of which regard, refer to or demonstrate some part or parts of the Kingdom of Heaven.

3) Matthew uses the phrase “kingdom of heaven” 31 times and no other Gospel writer uses it at all.

4) Matthew wrote for the Jews who alone would be concerned about the kingdom of heaven.

5) This parable sets forth one important aspect of the kingdom of heaven.

6) What is this important aspect?

3. Reference to S.T.P.O.

DISCUSSION: In this parable we have –

I. The kingdom of heaven.

1. Old Testament descriptions: Daniel 2:44; Isaiah 2:1-4.

2. Kingdom requires a king: Micah 5:2; Zecharaiah 6:12-13; 2 Samuel 7:11-13.

3. New Testament passages show fulfillment: Matthew 2:6 (Micah 5:2); Hebrews 7: 12-14 and 8:4 (Zechariah 6:12-13; Luke 1:30-33; Acts 2:25-36 (2 Samuel 7:11-13); Hebrews 12:28 (Daniel 2:44); and Hebrews 12:22-24 (Isaiah 2:1-4).

4. The Kingdom of heaven is here, not future. Matthew Zion; The city of the Living God; The Heavenly Jerusalem; The innumerable host of angels; The general assembly; The church of the first born ones; and mediated to God by Jesus Christ himself by his own blood.

II. Is like treasure which a man found.

1. Kingdom of heaven can be found, Acts 17:24-27.

2. Importance of searching: Matthew 5:6; 6:33; 7:7-8.

3. Difficulty: Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; 19:16-26.

III. Selleth all that he hath.

1. Significantly, he hid what he found until he could secure it for himself.

1) Unethical regarding the treasure, but a powerful point in the parable.

2) Consider the word “joy.” (Hebrews 12:2).

3) Sells all that he hath.

4) All is a large little word.

2. Selleth all that he hath.

1) “Don’t burn all your bridges behind you.”

2) Wrong!

3) Sell out to the Lord Jesus Christ!

4) Why?

IV. Buyeth that field.

1. We emphasize this point. What did he NOT buy?

1) A neighboring field.

2) A field across town.

3) A field that was more convenient.

4) A field which would cost him less.

5) A field that “looked just like it.

6) A field that a good friend told him was just as good.

7) A field his friend or neighbor owned.

8) Just any field, either of his own or of a friend’s choosing.

2. What did he buy? THAT field.

1) THAT field has the treasure!

2) THAT field alone meets the requirements.

3) THAT field alone compares to the Kingdom of Heaven!

4) Proverbs 23:23.

V. The reason for the parable.

1. The importance of the kingdom of heaven.

1) The most valuable treasure of life.

2) Must be hidden in our hearts, our field,

a. The seed, Luke 8:11;

b. Psalms 119:11.

c. Not to keep it from others, but to prevent personal loss of this treasure.

3) Sell all.

a. Romans 12:1 ( reasonable service – KJV).

b. 2 Corinthians 8:1-5.

2. The Kingdom of heaven, our only goal.

CONCLUSION:

1. We have seen:

1) The action; and

2) The lesson.

2. The Kingdom of heaven: love it, honor it, seek it, work in it, be part of it, and finally, give God all the glory and honor for it.

TITLE: Jesus’ Parables — The Hidden Treasure SUBJECT: Parables PROPOSITION: To set forth this parable and some of its major lessons.
