A querist asks, “In 1 Corinthians Chapter 7, Paul refers a couple of times to be speaking under “his own opinion” in regard to marriage. In one sense he even basically says “this is my opinion, but I can’t help but think the Spirit of God is helping me through it.” My question is, “Why was it necessary to add this was his opinion, and it not just be written like all other Scripture – straight from God?”<\/p>\n
In giving his “opinion,” on the various aspects of marriage, Paul was simply stating that the Lord had not given a specific “command” addressing these particular issues (i.e., 1 Corinthians 7:6; 1 Corinthians 7:12; 1 Corinthians 7:25; 1 Corinthians 7:40) during His earthly ministry as He had in 1 Corinthians 7:10 (cf. Matthew 5:32; Matthew 19:6; Matthew 19:9; Mark 10:9; Mark 10:11; Luke 16:18). Please note that Paul also gave his “opinion” in 2 Corinthians 8:8 and 2 Corinthians 11:17 – the Lord had not given a specific commandment during His earthly ministry regarding these issues either. Notice, however, that in all of his “opinions,” Paul was still under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 7:40) and thus still “inspired.” At no time did Paul “suddenly” become “uninspired” and then “inspired.”<\/p>\n
