Israel’s domain extended from the Euphrates River to the border of Egypt (Genesis 15:18). Responsible for so much, including a vast number of people, Solomon realized he needed help (1 Kings 3:8). So when God asked the young king what He could do for him, Solomon did not ask for long life or wealth – instead, he asked for wisdom (1 Kings 3:9), which the Lord granted (1 Kings 3:11-12).

It’s interesting to note that in 1 Kings 3:9, the Hebrew word translated “understanding” in Solomon’s request means “hearing.” God gave Solomon a hearing heart so he could properly judge the people, and “discern between good and evil.”

If we want wisdom, let’s ask God for it. James tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

Let’s remember that not only does God generously gives His wisdom to those who open and study their Bibles (2 Timothy 2:15; Proverbs 2:1-6), but like Solomon, those who do, will be able “to discern both good and evil” (Hebrews 5:14 – KJV).

Solomon was a young man charged with the responsibility of governing one of the most prosperous kingdoms in the ancient Near East.
