Our Lord once inferred that the soul of man is a priceless possession (Matthew 16:26). It is the soul which differentiates man from beast. When God breathed into man the breath of life and he became a living soul, we learn that there is something of God in every human being (Genesis 2:7; Genesis 1:26 [see commentary]).<\/p>\n
To keep our identity with God alive, this most priceless possession must be nurtured (Ephesians 6:4 KJV; cf. 2 Timothy 1:5; 2 Timothy 3:13-15; 1 Peter 2:1-2).<\/p>\n
As children of the living God, we need to promote the cultivation of the divine in man (2 Peter 1:3-4; cf. 1 Timothy 4:12-16). God is a Spirit (John 4:24) and that is why we need to set our hopes on things spiritual rather than in worldly, material power and wealth (Colossians 3:1-2; 1 Timothy 6:17-19).<\/p>\n
