I once questioned a state trooper presented with an \u201cOutstanding Trooper\u201d award about what the governor said when presenting the award. \u201cHe said you haven\u2019t once roughed up a drunk or used excessive force on anyone. How can you be a state trooper for fifteen years, dealing with the kind of stuff you deal with, and have that happen?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo things,\u201d the trooper said. \u201cFirst, if I am called to break up a fight at a tavern, I never say to myself, \u2018There\u2019s a drunk\u2019; I always say to myself, \u2018There\u2019s a man\u2014someone\u2019s husband, someone\u2019s son, someone\u2019s neighbor\u2014who got drunk.\u2019 I try to think of him as a man, not a crime.<\/p>\n
\u201cSecondly, the Bible says that a soft answer turns away wrath. So whenever I walk up to the window of an automobile, I always speak a little softer than the person I\u2019m speaking to.\u201d<\/p>\n
