The seventeen kids who shot classmates in schools in various parts of the United States had one thing in common: a problem with their dads\u2014a conclusion drawn by the FBI after studying the high school shooters in Paducah, Kentucky; Pearl, Mississippi; and Littleton, Colorado.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen a man doesn\u2019t get along with his father, it makes him mean; it makes him dangerous; it makes him angry,\u201d writes former NFL pro Bill Glass, who has thirty-six years of prison ministry experience. Glass continues:<\/p>\n
On the day before Father\u2019s Day, I was in North Carolina in a juvenile prison. I ate lunch with three boys. I asked the first boy, \u201cIs your dad coming to see you tomorrow on Father\u2019s Day?\u201d He said, \u201cNo; he\u2019s not coming.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s in prison.\u201d<\/p>\n
I asked the second boy the same question and got the same answer. I asked the third one why his dad wasn\u2019t coming, and he said, \u201cHe got out of prison about nine months ago, and he\u2019s doing good. I\u2019m proud of my father. He\u2019s really going to be a good dad to me, and he\u2019s going to go straight.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was protesting so much that I could tell something was wrong. So I asked, \u201cHow many times has your father been here to see you since he got out nine months ago?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe hasn\u2019t made it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, he lives way, way<\/i> away.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere does he live?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Durham.\u201d<\/p>\n
Durham was only two hours away. I had come fifteen hundred miles to visit the boy, but his dad couldn\u2019t come two hours? A lot of fathers are really deserters. When I\u2019m in a prison, I always challenge inmates to bless their kids. If you want to keep your kids out of prison, bless them.<\/p>\n
