And this permissiveness is harming kids of all ages, psychologists and educators say.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Karen Stabiner writes in <i>The New York Times<\/i>, \u201cIt seems that the parents of today\u2019s parents, those strict disciplinarians of the 1950s and early 1960s, may have been right all along: Father and Mother did know best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Nancy Samalin, a parent educator in New York City, explains one reason for the permissiveness: single- and two-parent families are simply overwhelmed. \u201cParents want their children to love them, and it\u2019s harder to say no than yes, especially if they\u2019ve been working all day and are tired,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Telling a child no is essential to raising healthy kids, says Linda Rubinowitz, psychologist at the Family Institute at Northwestern University in Chicago. \u201cIt gives the child a sense that you really understand what\u2019s going on. And it gives the child a way to deal with a problem in a social context. You can tell the child, \u2018Say your mom and dad won\u2019t let you do it, and grumble if you want.\u2019 That\u2019s face-saving for the child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Revetta Bowers, head of the Center for Early Education in Los Angeles, says schools are replacing parents as disciplinarians. \u201cSchools now make rules, which in many instances are the only rules that are not open to arbitration or negotiation,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhat children really need is guidance and love and support. We expect them to act more and more like adults, while we act more and more like children.
