Since Sweet was still mourning the trade-in of his Dodge truck, the two men immediately bonded, sharing truck stories and laughing at the bumper-sticker truism \u201cNothing is more beautiful than a man and his truck.\u201d Sweet tells what happened next:<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'>As I climbed into Tom\u2019s 2002 Ranger for the ride back to the airport a day later, I noticed two big scrapes by the passenger door. \u201cWhat <i>happened<\/i>?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>\u201cMy neighbor\u2019s basketball post fell on the truck,\u201d Tom replied sadly.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>\u201cYou\u2019re kidding! How awful,\u201d I said. \u201cThis truck is so new I can smell it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>\u201cWhat\u2019s even worse is my neighbor doesn\u2019t feel responsible for the damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>I immediately rose to my friend\u2019s defense. \u201cDid you contact your insurance company? How are you going to get him to pay for it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>\u201cThis has been a real spiritual journey for me,\u201d Tom replied. \u201cAfter a lot of soul-searching and discussions with my wife about hiring an attorney, it came down to this: I can either be in the right, or I can be in a relationship with my neighbor. Since my neighbor will probably be with me longer than this truck, I decided that I\u2019d rather be in a relationship than be right.
