When she didn\u2019t get better, we went to the hospital for tests. The first thing the doctor said to Debbie was, \u201cYou\u2019ve got some serious problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Debbie learned she had stomach cancer. Four months later, she passed away at age forty-three.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>During Debbie\u2019s suffering, I took refuge in the truth of Jesus\u2019 resurrection. It had been my major research area for twenty-five years, and I appreciated a student who asked, \u201cWhat would you do now if Jesus hadn\u2019t been raised from the dead?\u201d I told him that Jesus\u2019 bodily resurrection is the center of the Christian faith. After he died on the cross to pay for our sins, Jesus was raised from the dead. He appeared to many people in his physical body that was now immortal.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Knowing that helped me while Debbie was dying. I imagined what God might say to me in response to my questions about Debbie. He would ask, \u201cGary, did I raise my Son from the dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>\u201cOf course you did, Lord,\u201d I would say. \u201cBut why is Debbie dying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>\u201cGary, did I raise my Son from the dead?\u201d the question would come again.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>I imagined God repeating the same question until I got the point.
