At a community prayer breakfast, I sat with a group of men who began talking about retirement. The man next to me, who appeared to be in his early fifties, said how much he was looking forward to the end of his career. He talked about a conversation he\u2019d had with his wife that morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen she asked, \u2018What are you going to do when you retire?\u2019 I told her, \u2018I\u2019m going to sit on the couch and watch TV all day,\u2019 \u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The table was silent, but I couldn\u2019t keep quiet for long. \u201cIf you do that, you\u2019ll be dead in a year,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
He looked at me wide-eyed and asked why.<\/p>\n
I told him, \u201cIf the lack of purpose in your life doesn\u2019t kill you first, your wife will.\u201d<\/p>\n
