My wife, Carol, a career counselor, was meeting with a client, George, who said to her in their first session, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out of the rubber industry.\u201d<\/p>\n
She gave him some homework to do before their next session. He came back the next week without having done a lick of homework. My wife asked, \u201cWhat will happen if you don\u2019t get out of the rubber industry?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy wife will divorce me,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you want that to happen?\u201d Carol asked.<\/p>\n
He couldn\u2019t keep the smile off his face. She knew then that he would never change his job till it gave him what he wanted: a divorce, with his wife taking the initiative and the guilt.<\/p>\n
Carol named this behavior \u201cthe doctrine of the prior agenda.\u201d \u201cYou can\u2019t help people change or find their mission when they have a conflicting prior agenda,\u201d she said. People will not change until they want to.<\/p>\n
