He goes against his conscience when he denies them; when he tempted Christ he did not dispute against the Scripture, drawing his arrows out of this quiver . . . Assent to the truth of the Word is but an act of the understanding, which reprobates and devils may exercise. But justifying faith is a compounded habit, and hath its seat both in the understanding and will: and, therefore, called a \u201cbelieving with the heart\u201d (Romans 10:10) yea, a \u201cbelieving with all the heart\u201d (Acts 8:37).<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:normal'><i>William Gurnall<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>1. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Faith without works is sufficient for salvation, and alone justifies.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>2. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Justifying faith is a sure trust, by which one believes that his sins are remitted for Christ\u2019s sake; and they that are justified are to believe certainly that their sins are remitted.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>3. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;By faith only we are able to appear before God, who neither regards nor has need of our works; faith only purifying us.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>4. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No previous disposition is necessary to justification; neither does faith justify because it disposes us, but because it is a means or instrument by which the promise and grace of God are laid hold on and received.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>5. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All the works of men, even the most sanctified, are sin.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>6. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Though the just ought to believe that his works are sins, yet he ought to be assured that they are not imputed.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:18.0pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height: normal'>7. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Our righteousness is nothing but the imputation of the righteousness of Christ; and the just have need of a continual justification and imputation of the righteousness of Christ.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0cm;margin-right:0cm;margin-bottom:0cm; margin-left:18.0pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent:-18.0pt;line-height:normal'>8. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All the justified are received into equal grace and glory; and all Christians are equally great with the virgin Mary, and as much saints as she is.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:normal'><i>Martin Luther, Eight statements on justifying faith<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'>Faith alone justifies us \u2026 because faith brings us the spirit gained by the means of Christ.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:normal'><i>Martin Luther<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'>Faith, thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification; yet is it not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all the saving graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:normal'><i>Westminster Confession<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2026 we have been justified through faith \u2026 The Bible, Romans 5:1 It is through faith that Almighty God has justified all that have been from the beginning of time.
